I am considering building a steel boat possibly a Van de Stadt Forna or Caibbean. Has any one got any idea of time scale. I would purchase a steel kit for round bigle construction. Skills are not a problem.

To hard to say without knowing how much effot you will put into it.
I had a 36'van de stadt "Seal" but had the hull and deck professionally made, then full time fitted it out myself. Of course I was stupid and went cruising before I finished her.But I loved that yacht.

Haven't built one but spent a lot of time restoring and altering one. Had thought of building one myself but some serious investigation alerted me to the consideration that it takes an awful long time to build a boat from scratch. The hours and hours of work exclude all other pursuits and normality of life for the many years it involves. A typical example is the number of unfinished dreams that lie rusting in back yards up and down the country. Probably better to have a yard build the basic hull and leave the more pleasurable fitting out to yourself.

We are building our own steel boat it is a Caleo which is 40' and is a Tuckerdesign.
We started this 4 Years ago and are only now seeing some progress, as we only have weekends to work on the boat.
It will take you twice as long as you think to build the boat and also 3 times the cost.
However if you are prepared for the hard work and time it will take, then my advice is to go ahead and do it.
