I would be interested to hear from anyone who sailed on the Assyria and knows about Guiness dropping test bottles off near Newfoundland. I found a letter today in a friends loft in Glenagivney Ireland, sent in the 1950`s from the Guiness company in Liverpool. The letter thanked my friends father for contacting them regarding one of the bottles he had found washed up at Kinnego bay. The letter gave the co-ordinates of where the bottle was dropped and the name of the ship. I thought this was very interesting and would be grateful to anyone who has more information.

I sailed on the Assyria as apprentice and 3rd mate during the fifties. I didnt hear of any such tests with Guiness bottles. As I remember we drank copious amounts of Barclays Red & Barclays Blue !
