As some of you may know, the 200 odd miles Whitelighter limped in the summer with a very knackered port UJ and bell housing was done with the boat suffering a considerable amount of vibration - I have been finding loose screws and bolds all over the place ever since.

The most worrying loosness is the staunchion rails and pushpit (I think thats the bit at the front) have become noticably less attached to the boat. Not about to fall off, just a bit wobbly. Thing is, tightning the heads leads no-where, leading me to suspect they are actually bolts with nuts on the other side. Thing is, all my lockers are lined, well made a very much attached to the hull. Any suggestions on a way to secure the rails accepting I cant get to the underside of the deck, or a more obvious way to get to the underside of the deck?

Hi,

I have a BMB29 and last summer a very kind raggie lost control while berthing and came to, full onto my bow - my anchor made sure he came off worse but none the less one of my starboard stanchions was loosened and would not re-tighten with the original screws. I was advised that the screws are self tapping that tap into some metal bonded in place beneath the stanchion - I upped the diameter of the screw and all worked fine.

Just got to fix the gel coat crazing now at the foot of the stanchion?

I'd ask a Bav dealer to get a technical contact in the factory that might be able to advise.

On the S28, some of the aft ones might be accessible (if you're a midget with long arms), but getting to the front ones would involve removing chunks of cabin and padded panels.

Jez - we had this on the 3055. We managed to gently peel back the lining, get at the nuts (SWMBO inside armed with spanner, me outside armed with sealant gun and screwdriver) and tighten them up. Did all stanchion bases and cleats.

Footnote; many people knock Bayliners ( and I know you had one ) but they are usually "fixable".

I'd be surprised if you couldn't fix yours the same way.

I was hoping with all the raggies being anti-bav saying lockers are unfinshed GRP etc, that access would be easy. imagine my suprise when I opened all my lockers to find them beautifully lined with wood, and all very very well fixed to the boat!!!!

Are you sure you can not get to the bults through smartly places openings (they may not be obvious)? Perhaps Bavaria have a tech support that you could ask.
In my boat there is a hatch or or other access point to all the bults.

Diesel engines vibrate.
They cause vibration throughout the ship/boat.
All ships and boats with diesel engines vibrate.
Due to vibration throughout the ship/boat, nuts, bolts and screws loosen.
A regular naval procedure is to check/tighten all nuts, bolts and screws.
In my time this was known as doing ' keeps and fastenings'.
This is a good Naval practice to get into.
If you do not check them tight, eventulay they will fail, so do not be surprised when they do.
