I can't find the thread now, but just found a pic which would seem to make a good argument for starting them young and gently.

The photo was probably taken in the USA - the boats in the background are American classes (the one on the right looks like a Tanzer 26).

In the USA there is a requirement by the USCG that lifejackets have to be either worn or carried (I cant remember which) in all dinghies, including inflatable tenders, everywhere in US waters.
And this includes warm tropical waters in the US Virgin Islands.

I understand that you can be fined heavily for not complying with this rule.

I see Tina's not wearing a lifejacket either /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

oh yes she is /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif it's one of those double chamber ones /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tina's jacket is one she purchased via a company

They have other great products as well, do you know of them?

CJ is Stewart's son, as in Tina's big Brother who died of Cardiomyopathy, so we have kinda taken on Stews role of getting them out on the water. You all know the story of Tina's bruv, who was a keen and fit sail racer and a boat builder here at the Basin!

I think it's great to get the kids out, in fact we have quite a few of the owners here at the Basin asking if their kiddies can do their PB1 so as to understand how to use their little tenders. Its great to see them out there buzzing around safely in their tubs.

Can't say I've heard of them /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As for the Cardiomyopathy association , personally I think they do some wonderful work and they get my full support , but it's good to see you both doing your best to help CJ

I'm with you there. You're more likely to be careful if you aren't wearing one.

It seems a lot of fatalities happen from tenders rather than boats but perhaps the darkness and quantity of booze consumed is more relevant there.

Don't see why. Those light little bathtub boats wouldn't create enough of a wake to make a swan wobble, let alone spill the tea. Also, zoom lens squashes perspective.

"More people are drowned in the bath than from private pleasure boats. Shall we all insist others wear them in the bath?"

Could the reason that fewer people drown from boats be because more of them wear life jackets.

Or maybe more people take baths than sail boats

Or maybe more old people take baths than sail boats

I never believe any statistic that disagrees with my prejudices.
