Just spent all morning removing two bolts to get starter off. I have now used jumpleads direct from car to terminal with braded wire and still nothing. The engine had only done 200hrs so what could be the problem?

Found the problem, the 4 brushed were seized in there little sliding channels but all free now BUT how do i get the spinning bit back in if all the brushes are protruding??

Usually they can be eased back and the spring placed at the side of them to hold them in position. Put the end housing back on then hook the springs back on to the end of the brushes. This all depends whether you can access them when housing back on tho.

Also i have just found a bearing on the floor, i assume it is part of this, looks like it goes i recess on flywheel ind of shaft...does that sound right?

Its prob the bearing out of the housing that holds the brushes.Grease it and put it back in. the grease will help it stay put whil you are lining up the shaft.

Ps. Should have mentioned ...the cause was when the sterngland was leaking, on one occasion the water went as high as the starter to cause the corrosion.

Good stuff. Nice to know that you got a result and you didnt have to fork out a fortune.

the bit you found on the floor sounds like the locking ring that fits on the shaft. If you have never taken one to bits before and it was loose on the shaft, in the grove was a little round spring that you must have removed and lost, this gear keeps the spiral drive on the shaft and limits the throw. Trip to a auto electrical workshop will sort it out for you.

Well done on the DIY there should be more of it in a world where we are constantly forced away from DIY to the specialist.
I would rather stuff it up myself than pay someone else to stuff it up.
good luck olewill
