It had to happen eventually; the starter motor on the 1995-vintage MD22 engine our our Moody 44 decided it no longer wanted to play.
On turning the key, I just heard a high pitched whirring from the motor.
Taking the starter out was pretty easy, and examination showed that the drive gear moved nicely up the drive shaft when I rotated it by hand.
After trawling the internet to learn more about how these "pre-engage" starter motors work, I figured the fault was possibly in the solenoid itself, failing to pre-engage the drive gear onto the engine fly wheel before turning the engine over.
Then began a looong search for parts which proved impossible. The Lucas unit was long out of production and replacement (equivalent) starters ranged from around £400 to well over £700.
Eventually I came across UNITEXCHANGE based in Borehamwood, which is the point of this posting.
They specialise in refurbishing Starter Motors and Alternators (or providing replacements if needed).
I CANNOT PRAISE THEM HIGHLY ENOUGH!

A very helpful chap called Simon did an initial diagnosis with me over the phone then quoted me for repairing it.
Here's the best part:
On opening the box I thought they had sent me a new unit by mistake - it was like a NEW unit, immaculately clean, re-painted. Amazing.
If anyone ever has a problem with their starter motor or alternator, DON'T - use these guys, they have saved me ££hundreds.
I am in no way connected to the Unit Exchange business, I am just their latest fan!
cheers!
