Starter motor number 3

So the short circuited starter motor was returned to the reconditioners....result / they say it has got wet inside!!!

The theory is that when the original starter was submerged water also got into the bell housing. This is not obvious ( it felt dry when I had my hand in) but it must be thrown up when the fly wheel turns.
So a new problem for you.... how to get and keep it dry?? I suppose that I can get a tube down there and pump must of it out ?? Possibly there is a drain but it all seems very inaccessable down there. Any crumbs of comfort welcome!!

Have you got/can you borrow a Pela type vacuum gadget for changing oil - the thin tube on those would got into remote spaces. Once you've got any pooled water out I would have a good long run generating plenty of heat would have dealt with any droplets.

You could also spray something on the starter to keep any damp out.

Thanks MS that would be usefull, I have got one of those little battery powered pumps and could fit a small tube on that or buy one of the oil emptying gadgets you mention.
Unfortunatly I really need to get it all out as I cant start the engine to warm things up without bolting the starter on, any water still down there will get sprayed up and no doubt enter the starter again!!

Manual bilge pump? either your own, or someone with a portable one? - maybe need a smaller diameter hose to get down the hole.

Plan so far is a small pump then stick a small bore outlet from an eberspacher down the hole. I have one with a small (25mm outlet) and duct which I will stick down there.
How does that sound to the panel??)
Does anyone know if there are holes in the bell housing (4108) which would allow water in, or a drain to let it out.
I believe that the water must have got in when I had my recent flood as the water was 18" up the engine ( over the starter) Hopefully once it is out it wont get in again!!
Most gratefull for any advice!!

I found a workshop manual for a 4108 at the bottom of this page

I think a drain plug is a good idea if the water is coming in from somewhere else - ie burst bellows on an outdrive, but in your case I don't know. Can you see enough to drill one and tap it for a removeable plug? I assume you only get wet when the ship floods. My volvo flooded and the starter filled up. a skoosh of WD40 fixed it as the bolts were rusted in and I couldn't dismantle it. In cars, my experience is that water getting in from puddles etc, is thrown off and down (and out) because the engine is running at the time. Don't flood while stopped....

FWIIW Some cars had hole in the bottom of the bell housing partly closed with a split pin - the split pin helped "wick" any oil (or water) out. The real Landrovers (not the "chelsea tractor" variety) had a proper drain hole sealed with a threaded brass plug.

This isn t Dundee country.....We have bridges across our creek crossings....We drive so fast through puddles trying to soak the neighbours there is no chance of water getting in..

Its Possible but I think I will try pump followed by rags on stiff wire followed be heat from the ebberspacher.
