Hi guys
We have an elderly, raw water cooled, Perkins 4.108 that we've been nursing along for a long time. The motor itself is I believe, pretty sound. Theres no smoke, knocks or banks at least, but ancillaries like starter, alternator, water pump and wiring etc are all beginning to give trouble.
Question? Although a total b**** to access, is there any way to identify which type of starter motor is fitted PRIOR to removing it? It's quite an early model with separate solenoid mounted on the other side of the engine. There are no doubt those umoung us who could tell the items apart at a glimpse. Alas, I am not one of them:(

Identify your engine from the Perkins engine manual and find out which types of starters they had fitted.

Clean your old starter and look for a number on it, they often have stickers and the part number embossed into them which makes them easy to identify.

Is the solenoid built into your starter or is it separate, is it a 3 or 4 bolt fixing, and which configuration are the wires attached? all these give the details you may need to identify your starter.

Chances are that it is a Lucas unit, but many people such as Nippon, Bosch, and many others make a replacement unit.

I think removal may be only answer although if a puka Marine unit it might be simpler .
Perkins built so many variations of the engine which were then marinised various means.
Mike Bellamy at lancing Marine Brighton may be able to help.
