The starter motor for my Bukh 10HP has expired and cannot be economically rebuilt. Problem is Bukh Diesel have quoted me £333 (yes £333!) +VAT. The motor is a Paris-Rhone type 612 A 1650, but I believe the replacement is a Bosch. Does anyone know of an affordable way round this problem?

All starter motors can be rebuilt, the body, ammature and brush assembly are standard, in your case to Paris-Rhone. The only variation is the mounting flange to the engine, worst case therefore is to take exchange starter, remove flange end from old unit and fit to new unit, there is your rebuilt starter.

Try your local LSUK ( used to be Lucas ) they carry a load of exchange starters, and do rebuilds.

yep, go to lucas service UK, give them the rusty pieces, they will take the bosch numbers and price a new one (probably cheaper)

then comes the clever bit... ask them what the motor is off. go to scrap yard, get 2nd hand motor, give the old one to a decent mechanic, who'll for some beer tokens will mend it sufficiently to be a spare.

hope this helps, steve.

All motors can be rebuilt. I got ripped off £400 for a starter for my Volvo, only to find out that it was the same as a volvo car, which retails for £86. The difference, a bit of heat shrink wrap round the solenoid. Bloody expensive bit of heat shrink!!

If its as shot as you say, take the end cover off and rip the guts out of it. The bit your after is the armature. If its not too badly worn, take it to your local engineers and get them to turn it down a smidgen on their lathe. Take out the brushes and reface them with a very fine file or a bit of emery cloth.

Get the bit back from the engineers shop and stick it in the oven for a couple of hours on a low heat, Bung it all back together and spin it up. I've done this a couple of times and the starters have lasted a couple more years.

Oi, you lot don't laugh it works!

Re: quite right

I never ever go out and buy a recone unless there is no other alterative.
I have split up to three other motors to get the parts I need to rebuiled the one required .

get down to scrap yard with tape and verier to hand measure up , your only interested in the basics cos the flange / bendix as all have said is all you need .
I would be surprised if you cant find something cheap to get you by.

Another point if you had put your locality in your bio I may have been able to point you in the right direction or some one else might .
Cheers

I'm glad to see the Great Starter Motor Rip-off is finally being brought to light!!
It's been going on for decades - I bought a starter for a twin 75hp diesel Project 31 I owned in 1980 - it was 350 pounds from marine store and 86 from Peugot dealer!
I was quoted 6oo of the hard earned for a replacement for my current AD41b engines. They must be joking !!
Fortunately turned out to be just a loose earth strap- but no way was I paying those prices.
I know that the pricing of V**vo replacement parts has been taken to task on these forums several times - but to my knowlege there has been no satisfactory explanation.

Can anyone recommend a similar 'car part' to replace the starter motor and alternator for the Volvo 2003?

Many thanks in advance.

Starter = Valeo (pt no 184202)
Air fiter= Cooper (pt no AZA259)
Also have cross refs for oil & fuel fiters (but not to hand)
Available Partco, or local auto factors.

If you Pm me the numbers stamped on the casing, and the manufacturer, I'll see what I can do.
