Can anyone tell me the Hitachi part number for the starter motor on a 1GM (I think it's the same for 2GM & 3GM models, too).
One of the previous owners of my boat has the starter motor reconditioned, and it came back spray-painted matt black. Looks neat, but the Hitachi label is now completely obscured.

Does anyone else make an equivalent starter? If so, what part number? Any idea of price?

A kind friend in Belgium, who most unfortunately was banned from these bulletin boards (I hope he has now been forgiven) sent me the workshop manual for the 1GM10

The starter motor is covered in chapter 12.7, and the model number is S114-303.

"30 seconds rating, I kw, clockwise rotation, weight 4.4 kg, overrunning clutch, magnetic shift, 9 pinion teeth...."

Yes, same motor for IGM10, 2GM20 and 3GM30

Hitachi prices are awesome aren't they - I dunked my engine, and the alternator, of course, needed a rewind....

Try and make sure you get the 1000 watt starter that Mirelle quoted. Early 1GMs had a less powerful motor (I think 600 W) which gave problems. The more powerful motor is interchangeable.

Re: I replaced my Hitachi alternator

I did the same, then had a conversation with my local auto electrician (he was making up cables for me) and he recommended the Bosch type that is fitted to Ford Escorts and the like. He says they're much more robust, easily available and fit on the same footprint as the Lucas. He also said he'd supply me with one - not new but reconditioned and guarunteed by him - for £80. This is a 60 yr old professional, not some yob. I wish we'd had that conversation before I'd bought the Lucas!
