Started her for the first time and...

Hi, if your running the boat out of the water be sure where the boat draws its water i assume it a bravo 3 which has the pump on the engine but can either draw through the leg fins or on some b3 boats it can draw through a through hull fitting. I find that when the engine is running if you feel the tops of the top of exhaust risers these should never be to hot to hold, gauges often lie. With regards to the trim tabs the most likly cause is a 10 amp fuse behind the trim switches, also ensure all the master switches are on, sometimes they are wired through the domestic battery switch just to confuse you!

Hi guys, sorted all but the temp gauge, seems it's knackered after testing it...it's not returning to cold. Pain in the arse, found one on ebay though from the states "Teleflex" Sahara 58404. So will replace that.

About to start it again and make sure it's drawing water. It's a bravo 3 so impeller on the engine.

Could the cold snap have knackered my gauge? Very strange it's failed. Also some sod has taken my petrol from when it was on the ground at the marina, I wish Hamble Point had better security, anyway looks like I'm not going back there anyway...

If the temp gauge is permantley reading full scall it sounds like a short to ground.

Pull the wire off the sender and put the ignition switch to run position, gauge should read nothing. then touch the end of the wire at the sender to ground, the needle should lift to the top of the scale, full scale deflection.

If with the terminal off the sender the guage reads full scale then next thing to check is pull the wire that comes from the sender off the back of the guage. Then see if needle drops, if it does, then its a short in the wiring somewhere. If the needle stays high, I suspect its the gauge.

Surely petrol won't go stale in 5-6 months? :S

Well I put a full bottle of fuel stabiliser in mine last October and ran the motor for half an hour to make sure it got to the carb.

Started it for the first time yesterday and it ran like a sack of spanners falling downstairs. It gradually cleared up, but still a bit iffy at tickover, so I put it down to the lower flashpoint fuel volatiles evaporating over the winter.

Since peering down the intake showed both throttle plates merrily icing up, I guess this confirms that the fuel in the carb and lines does not want to vapourise as readily as it should with current air temps.

If its any consolation, I too had gremlins in the shape of a squealing drivebelt and lots of smoke on start up.

Alternator was seized solid, got it freed off, but just ordered a new one to be on the safe side, don't trust the old one now even though it feels ok. It IS 15 years old tho and original fitment, so it owes me nowt.
