I was wondering whether the stantion tubes/guardrail should be perpendicular to the waterline or be angled. My stantion tubes have a bend in the base section and were angled inwards but others who are more knowledgeable suggest they should be angled out to compensate for the angle of heel when going forward on the windward (high) side deck. As the previous owner made a number of strange choices in his later years I have thought they may have been bent accidentally and then randomly redistributed so I planned to get them straightened but who knows...The Shadow knows!

Stanchions

Yes the compromise is that if you like the crew to sit up on the gunwhale leaning out then it is most comfortable for them if they are angled outwards.
However as said they then are just waiting to foul jetties and other boats. My compromise was no stanchions/guard rails. But then that doesn't suit every one. good luck olewill

Most stanchions are bent inwards ( or have biased bases ), so as to end up vertical while based on a cambered deck; outward leaning jobs would be nothing but a serious PITA.
