As Ryanair are offering reasonably priced flights from Prestwick to Stansted I'm thinking about visiting the boat show can anyone offer recommendations regarding travel from Stansted to Excel? How far how long?
I'll also be staying over one night in central London near Farringdon station so wondered wither it would be best to visit Excel straight from Stansted on the day of arrival or to go the day after arrival and travel straight from Excel back to stansted? flight gets in at 0805hrs and leaves at 2145hrs
Any suggestions?

Thanks Ian

Thanks
I've read that it seemed like a lot of changes but wondered if anyone had any personal experience and how long it would take.

There's a Rail link from Stansted to London Liverpool Street - 45 minutes. Farringdon on the Circle Line (Underground) is five minutes direct from Liverpool Street (3 stations). From Liverpool Street, there are two ways to get to Excel: one by rail to Stratford and change there for Custom House. I have a vague memory that there was engineering work on the Stratford to Custom House line but can't find any note on it. I reckon 45 minutes would get you from Liverpool Street to Excel, possibly better if you hit the trains right.

Method 2, Tube (Central Line) from Liverpool Street to Bank and then Dockland Light Railway to Custom House. You will probably have guessed by now that Custom House is the station for Excel. Stations actually as the rail and Dockland Light Railway are separate stations next to each other. The DLR route will be slower but has some good views of Docklands if you like that sort of thing. I mean after North Ayrshire you probably need a good urban view (I'm being ironic - honest). The DLR route is longer and therefore slower.

Frankly I would go on the DLR unless you are certain of your train connections from Liverpool Street and Stratford. Very quick if right but more trains into London stop at Stratford than on the way out which is the way you will be going. I recall that there are three trains an hour from Stratford to Custom House.

Getting in a 8.05 am, assume you will get to Liverpool Street by 9am so you'll be at the Show by 10am if not earlier

Maybe these are the engineering works on DLR that Tillergirl was refering to:

On Sunday 13 January, planned engineering works will be taking place between Stratford and Bow Church.

Might have been that Vic. Anyway, there's nothing on the engineering page of the London Overground website during the duration of the Boat Show.

putting in Stansted and Custom House. You will get some alternatives which should be quicker but are slightly more involved. Note that you get the choice of buses as well!

[/ QUOTE ] I found that info on the DLR travel news page of the TFL website. I don't think the "Overground" includes DLR.

Anyone travelling a long distance to the show or at the weekend would be well advised to check for engineering works, but it does seem to mean checking national rail services, the London overground, the "Tube" and DLR separately.

After the fiasco this week I would not put money on Liverpool street being open on weekends.

Do the Stanstead airport services go via Stratford It would seem logical for them to stop there if thats the route they use and if so that would be a good for the journey in one direction even if staying in Central London for 1 night.

No the Stansted trains don't go through Stratford. You have to change at Tottenham Hale I think. I've opted for the Yacht Club Coach this year. Does mean that you have to leave at a certain time but at least we can just get on the Coach and forget about it until we get there - and its a good price £23 return coach and entry.

Another option, National express coach NXA9, 45 mins to Stratford
Jubilee line 4 stops 5 mins.

Jubilee line does not stop anywhere near Excel... Change at Canning Town for Custom House on DLR...

For choice of methods you can use this:

web page

Includes engineering works, buses and national rail....
