If you are going Ryanair, try their link to Hertz. I did it a couple of weeks ago and quite reasonable if you resuse all the upselling when you collect.

Even if you are not flying Ryanair you can use the link as you book in advance and they do not check which carrier you have used.

same with www.1car1.co.uk. I actually have one of their cars at the moment while mine is being repaired. (Very) cheap and cheerful.

we found it cheaper to pre book the car with alocal branch of a national hire group- ie national. beware of pre paying fuel with credit card. cheaper to fill it yourself at ie tesco. they dont always mention the damage waiver[ extra $10 but prob worth it. my partner was suprised to have a £250 credit card deduction for what was someone elses damage

Oh dear ! pitfalls to look out for as well! N othing is straigh forward as usual.Theoretically all can be done from the saftey and comfort of my own home........I wish I could belive it ! Thanks for advice.
