I think my standing rigging is 6 years old (I didn't have her then) - however the top shrouds and backstay seem to be rusting a bit - the shrouds especially just above and around the bottle screws - with rust even runnung down the topsides (despite being stainless). So I am thinking of replacing them (34 ft yacht). However everything I read talks of 19 strand wire. These seem to have 12 strands you can count on the surface (and it's 7mm diameter). Obviously I know v little about the technicalities here - anyone help please?!!

There are 2 versions of stainless rigging 316 and 304.

In certain places they use 304 as it is lightly stronger but it will not stand up to conditions like 316. Just make sure the correct sizing and grade is used. Make them prove it by seeing the real label.. Boat rigged in the Caribbean seem to have problems as they go into the Pacific.

304 rusts when salt crystals dry on the metal. Any dampness then sets off corrosion.
