I have wanted to ask this question for a long time and seeing as Robin and Lescargot have invited me back /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif


I am a 10 ton 30 knot 600 hp stinker for those that dont know me.

I regularly transit a popular narrow 20 m gap .
(portsmouth submarine barrier for those that know the area).

Most boats sail and power motor through it as it is so narrow.

I am always amazed that Yachts see us coming at 25 knots and they don't wait, they just keep coming forcing us to close quarters.

should I stand on ?

I guess most of you expect me to be polite, ignore the col regs and slow down.....

so why do you insist on standing on, clearly under power on my Port side ?

No danger of collision, just the wash issue I am conscious of.
 
You keep to your right of the channel, and I'll keep to my right of the channel, what's the problem, if we're both under power. If I'm under power, or motor sailing, then I will go through the gap as far to starboard as I can, so there's plenty of room.

Now, if I'm sailing /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But That's not what you asked, is it?
 
So which colreg are you relying on in this instance which says the boat going slower under power must stop so that they don't pass near to the boat going faster under power?

I would suggest that there could be an argument to say that travelling through a 20m gap at 25knots at the same time as other vessels does not comply with rule 6. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

L'Escargot has asked the right question. I shall be interested to see the answer.

Speaking for myself, I would hope for two things from you:

1. Yes - slow down - 25 knots through a busy 20 metre gap is very, very poor seamanship

2. Yes - obey the colregs

What is wrong with you? Or are you just a troll?
 
Assuming this is not a wind-up I reckon both boat and owner are 10 ton 600 hp stinkers! Colregs to one side (those threads are fairly tedious usually) what's wrong with some basic consideration and putting a few minutes on your trip?

Thanks, that is exactly what I am seeking.

It is obvious from 1/2 mile away I am going to be there at the same time.

We are both under power and I am the stand on vessel, as Malc says there is loads of room as long as we both remember which side to pass on, its just the wash I feel guilty at but they choose to go into it.

Why on earth cant they just slow down, or go about to save us going through the gap at the same time .

On a similar subject when I am leaving Chichester, Poole, Hamble why dont you slow down and let me pass at 7 knots, to save me passing at 25 knots as soon as the unrestricted bit starts.
 
How do you reckon you are stand on vessel??? Sureley the vessel coming opposite direction to you is also stand on vessel assuming you all understand the colregs you will both pass port to port!!... If I am motoring against you at 5kts and you are doing 20kts I will just have to accept your wash...the decent thing to do would be to slow down to reduce your wash to an acceptable level but to be honest I would not expect such gratitude from a mobo!!

Have I got this wrong - you are seriously suggesting that people should slow down so you can pass them before the speed limit ends? You also talk about people 'going about' for the same reason - which of course means they are stand on vessel not you, anyway.

Sorry either the plonk has got to me, you are on another planet or this is just a troll.

I find I always meet a bunch of raggies arriving at the gap all at once and have to wait. So I guess they think its payback time for wash, as of course being a mobo we bob about once not planing. (although I try to never plane close to yachts, honest! )

It just takes an age for everyone to get through. I know both communities cant comprehend what it is like for the other. But to give yachts an idea, its like suddenly having to drive a car with wandering steering at about 7 mph through town instead of 25 mph ("where its safe to do so" he says"to avoid any misunderstandings)

a DAKA is a south African joint, smoked at the Religious festival of Dacarak (my previous boats name).

my post too was meant to be light hearted with a little serious point....

There are times when leaving a harbour following a yacht that I think we would both have a better time if they pulled to the side and eased off to let me pass wash free.
Same at the sub gap, if you see a mobo slow down why not ease back to 4 knots to let him pass, staying at 8 knots forces him to come passed at 10 knts complete with wash.
And there are times when there is no need to keep hammering on toward the gap so we both arrive together, I can be through, passed and out the way very quickly.

just a thought.

Come on Pete, several have asked and you are ignoring the question - why are you stand on? - it is asked on the basic assumption that the boats are converging from opposite directions.

Or are you suddenly going to decide that they are at right angles to each other and that the slower boat is running parallel with the blocks crossing your path - do you perhaps have photos or a diagram? You have been known to chuck in a little bit of a crippler further into the debate. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
Not if I can help it, but with my luck the only two boats in the Solent will be me and the yacht and we both arrive at the gap at the same time /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif So yes I slow down.

There are of course the sand banks ( winner bank ???) that yachts from chichester go around.

I tend to turn starboard 1/2 mile before chich bar keeping my track across shallow and yacht free waters.

I too slow down but with the cost of fuel next year it would be nice to educate them into keeping out the way for a few mins it takes us to pass through /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
 
Now there's a surprise - a somewhat different situation than inferred in your first post! I am getting to know you too well. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I would say your biggest problem there is that you will find yourself becoming the overtaking vessel and you suddenly go from stand on vessel to having to keep clear - time to back off those throttles I am afraid. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
