Quick update on this. Webpages posted by boat mike were very useful and I have converted to a single line halyard/ parrel system. Also from the pages he referred me to I found out how to tie the topsail halyard hitch. The right tool for the job here. Combined with a fixed topping lift/ lazyjack on either side the sail now goes up and down under much better control. I would recommend the system to anyone swithering about it.
