Anyone here have or used a Standard horizon plotter, have seen them advertised and spec seems good.

Would appreciate any experience on practical use.

Thanks

We've just bought the CP180i with Cmap Max chart - impressed so far ... £430 all in.

Reason we bought it was because we wanted AIS and although I could get that on the laptop for less, the CP180i has a sunlight viewable display (like most chart plotters!) .. so can be placed in the cockpit. The reason for the cheaper internal GPS is that it will be in the cockpit so extra wires and mushrooms are not needed.

We've got tiller steering so no NavPod by the helm to put instruments on - so it has to be viewable from a distance ... which it has been so far. We're going to output NMEA data to a GPS repeater already mounted in the cockpit so we use less of the expensive screen to display the standard data (SOG, COG, bearing and heading)

There is a new one out from SH which has a 7" widescreen, but it is more money.

I have a CP1000 and I cant help but rave about it. Its fantastic. I have the C-Map mWiide charts, animated lights, aerial photos of marinas and there is PC software to plan routes at home.

I must also report that mine got moisture inside, but it has a 3 year warranty. The Standard Horrizon people are great, lent me their demo unit as I was going on leave and on the boat. SH are actually YAESU U.K. who are a very professional ham radio outfit.

They fixed mine, arranged all collections and deliveries by next day service (the deliveries that is not the repair) and upgraded the software.

Its easy to use, I am very pleased with its many functions. I am sure all the top brands will be good, and I guess any using the same software will be very similar.

I suggest you find somewhere they have them on display. Got mine in Port Solent

web page

Good luck

I bought one of the first at the LIBS in 2004.

I wired it up, switched it on and found the usage so logical that i have never since used the instruction book.

it is sited at the helm and it talks to the autopilot. It has NEVER failed and is fully visable even in mid-summer, midday Mediterranean sunlight.

I cannot recommend it too highly. New features seem to reveal themselves, day by day.

I've just bought 3 SH handheld radios for my YC rescue boats as back up to the main radios.
Everyone I've spoken to seems to have nothing but good things to say ~ we'll see!

Hi all,

The New 7" widescreen is the CP300 and CP300i.
The "i" denotes built in GPS antenna.

We have just taken in our first delivery of these and they are filtering out to the dealers now.

One thing to mention all our marine equipment comes with a 3 year warranty as standard this includes cover for waterproofing!

Many thanks

Just fitted Standard Horizon on my boat + matching radio. Coupled to AIS engine. All working great and well worth the money.

Fitted a CP175c to our new boat, used it at the weekend coming across the murky thames estuary...absolutely top notch.
We went for the bigger 7" screen, cause when playing with the 5" in the swinderly, the screen looked a little "cramped"....
I'm already planning to move this one upstairs and get a 10" one to replace the ageing Raymarine Navcenter.

looking to get one to replace the aged Garmin thingy in Jedi, when cash permits (sale of previous boat). I have a mushroom anyway, is it worth getting the internal antenna job and sticking the (Gramin) mushroom data cable in? Unit would be on the bridge anyway but mushroom is up on the arch so an even better sky picture.

Well - whilst playing with our new CP180i in the indoors at home I didn't expect it to get a fix ... but it did ... more than my older Garmin Etrex could - so I guess the sensitivity in technology has come on a long way since then!

I don't know what the specs are for the mushroom - isn't the garmin one a coax? Most likely not compatible with the SH units.

Thanks John B these are an excellent product and a lot of thought seems to have gone into interfacing requirments with so many ports and the ability to confugure them in such detail.

I just need to feed mine AIS to complete the picture /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Garmin have both types but you are right in saying that if it is the Coax feed one then it will not work with the SH.

I have the 175 and very pleased with viewability as cockpit mounted. The hot shoe supplied, enables head unit to be removed easily for secure storage. For a few more vouchers a second shoe could be mounted at the nav station or pilot house. Intuitive interface. quick to fix from cold. I was impressed with SH3500se VHF with ram mike (mostly single handed so access to helm & vhf at the same time is important to me) build quality and compatability influenced choice.

I bought a Standard Horizon CP175C At the London show...
Not had much chance to test it fully still learning how to operate it...
You should note that if you get the extra mount?shoe you only get a minimal amount of cable to connect the "Sub station" to your junction box or whatever.
I spent a lot of time trying to buy the same cable from them...Its got "x" number of data wires and two larger power connections.
The reason I wanted the same cable was because I have no room topsides to mount the thing permanently so I've mounted the Bracket/Shoe to a piece of wood ( all pretty like) and made up some brass blind inserts which have been put in strategic places topsides ... One on the hatch slide, one on each side of the companion way, (for whichever tack I'm on) and finally one on top of the instrument console..
Now the unit can be put wherever I like.. Of course there's a trailing wire but when I'm up top alone that don't matter a pigs burp (as they say)... when the crew ( if there is one) are sailing the boat I can sit below at the Nav table and plug the consol head into the original mount on the bulkhead...
So the Yanks after much moaning from me supplied a mount and a heap of cable for a approx £ 10 shiiping cost.... When I got the their consignment I found that they'd simply used a length of the vast quantity of aerial cable that comes with the thing anyway and no thicker power wires... Still it's working ok.
Just to make it clear when I contacted MES in Bristol to ask for more cable a clown there tried to tell me that they could not supply a longer length because it was illegal!! Standard Horizon in Winchester simply refused to do anything... So I got on to their American offices... Apparently the things are made in Italy but they claimed that they couldn't obtain about 3 meters of the stuff. (There's gotta be miles of the cable on a drum somewhere in Italy)
The instrument's good but the bloody electronics world needs shaking up.
Any errors in spelling are due to my age!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Cheers Bob E...
