After reading the artical in Febuary's PBO I have bought the Standard Horizon VHF Handheld HX270E. The artical said there would a slip of paper that would explain where to find channel 37 M1 & M2 But there was not. I am guessing it is n0 & n1 after CH88 when "EXP" comes up on the display. There is no mention of this in the user's manual.

Yes the slip of paper does say n0 and n1, but in fact on my set the channels are called n1 and n2. If you can, do a test with another VHF on transmit with M1/M2 to be sure, but your assumption is almost certainly correct. These channels are programmed by the UK importers I think, and that's why they don't appear in the handbook.

Here is what Standard Horizon/Yaesu told me when I enquired last year

Yes, n0 =CH37 or CHM and n1 = Channel M2.
We are unable to put the letter M in the channel display.
We can computer program 40 private channels in the HX-270 and these are known as EXPansion channels.
We program two of these expansion channels as no and n1 as channels M and M2.
Sorry for lack of information.

I bought one at Excel. Mine had a piece in the instructions explaining that as the display does not produce the letter M, channels M1 and M2 are displayed as N1 & N2 respectively. The radio looks a good choice, as it appears much better specified than any of the cheap models from Silva, Cobra etc, but still a lot cheaper than the Icom. As an aside it is programmed with all European channels, plus all American & Canadian channels. There is a keyboard routine which switches the set between European, USA, & Canadian use. Very handy if you cross the Atlantic. Only slight downside is that it does not automatically switch to high power if you select channel 16.
