Standard Horizon or Raymarine DSC

Not exactly comparable, are they? The Raymarine is around £250. For that money, you could have a much nicer SH set (like a GX2000E with AIS) or perhaps an Icom M505.

I agree, however the prices i'm working with various discounts that i have available, they are a similar price in fact the raymarine comes out slightly cheaper than the SH. However i had probs with Raymarine stuff years back and SH have always been quietly reliable and simple. This is why i'm asking the question.

Go for the GX1500, I have had one for 4 years, excellent piece of kit, I would also recommend the remote handset fitted in the cockpit. This gives you all the radio functions without having to go below.

Looking at either

Standard Horizon GX1500E Fixed DSC VHF Radio
Or
Raymarine 55e DSC

Have you had any issues with any of them? Screen size, squelch or weird menus?

Cheers

I have a Raymarine DSC top of the range RAY215 with cockpit second station which came with the boat.

If I could chose I would buy SH without thinking twice.

Problems with Raymarine:

- very few functions compared to SH
- easier to go to the moon than making a DSC call with one of them
- No support for position polling (I have an hand held SH DSC which does!)
- they do break, and spares are not only hard to find after only a few years, but very expensive

DO NOT BUY A RAYMARINE VHF, IT IS NOT WORTH THE MONEY.

Thanks all. I thought i'd give Raymarine the benefit of doubt after a few years and a couple of takeovers by canvassing opinion- but it seems much the same.

Feedback much appreciated, i'll follow my gut instinct and probably go SH.

Cheers
