From my previous thread. I am now looking at the SH CP300 or CP300i chart plotters, basically the only difference is the "i" has an in built antenna receiver, the none "i" has a separate antenna receiver. What are the disadvantages and advantages between the two?
 
I chose the 300i because I wanted to be able to use it both in the cockpit and down below at the chart table with the minimum of complication, i.e. just a 12 volt socket at each location. This has worked out well, the integral aerial seems to work just as well in the cabin as it does outside. Mine is a fibreglass boat.

There is also an F version that allows depth/fishfinder functions.
 
Having just fitted a CP300 I do wish I had bought the 300i as it was a pain to have an extra antenna when it works very well from inside the boat (grp).

The only reason I can think of for getting the CP300 would be if you have a steel/alu boat that would cause signal problems.
 
Not sure to what extent it is going to impact but I was advised on Saturday by one of the chaps at Seamark Nunn that the Standard Horizon VHF radio I want may be a long time coming back into stock because they are manufactured in Fukushima :eek:

Don't know if their plotters are manufactured at the same facility but if they are I'd get what you want whilst it's still in stock ... and make sure it is actually in stock before parting with any folding stuff
 
The sensitivity of the 'i' version seems to be excellent. Mine will log on in the saloon with no problems and is naturally fine in the cockpit.

Not having to worry about the antenna connection as well means that I have three mounting points for the 300i in the boatas the nmea connections can be parralled without problems
 
We have a CP300i (and have been very pleased with it). I have a vague recollection that the CP300i can't be flush-mounted (i.e. screen mounted flush with panel, gubbins behind) as the aerial bump gets in the way, though I'm not 100% certain.

We weren't planning to flush mount it anyway (we use it mainly in the cockpit) so it didn't affect us. Having used it for a season or so, I now would avoid flush mounting anyway as it's useful to be able to tilt the screen for best visibility according to whether you are standing, sitting, or to one side.
 
My pal has just bought the 300i and with a Maplin 12v supply it worked well from inside both our houses. So I would think that unless you'r down below in a steel or ferro cement boat the 300i would be o.k.

p.s. my old SH CP175 is still going great with its 5" screen. Fitted with a NASA AIS it does most things the 300 will do.

I got the 300 with external antenna, reason I wasnt to flush mount it which is about the only reason apart from the fact that with an external antenna, I've taken a position feed to the DSC VHF. You can't do this with the i version.
 
300i

Got the 300i below on a Fulmar. Perfect! And I can move it to cockpit if I want.
Very pleased. Removing the old tracks needs practice, but once worked out is easy enough.
For the money they are hard to beat.

I think the i version has NMEA out that could easily be fed to a DSC VHF. I have a 300 flush mounted as teh i won't flush mount and have used the NMEA out to feed the VHF, I also have an AIS input which I love.
 
Another vote for the 300i. Now over 3 years old, easiliy demounted from the cockpit and hidden away in a locker when I'm away from the boat. Why have another aerial thingy hanging off the pushpit/mast/whatever?
 
Not wanting to throw a spanner in your works, but before you rush into the SH purchase, perhaps worth a quick peek at the new Lowrance HDS 7m..... everything that the SH does, plus the ability to add broadband radar, second stations and NMEA 2k devices at a later date..... its about £100 more though.... but does look very good.

The Plotters are not actually made by Standard Horizon - i think you'll find they are manufactured in Italy by Jeppesen.
