I've just submitted this query to Standard Horizon:

[ QUOTE ]
I have a new SH CP180i fed with AIS data by the NASA AIS engine on input 1.
I have noticed a problem with it.
Sometimes when selecting an AIS target it reboots the CP180i unit, rolling over the same target has the same effect until the unit is turned off and on using the Red power button. Once the unit has been reset this way it will then display the information on the previous errant target.
This error occurred several times over the weekend in the Portsmouth Harbour (Solent) area.
Clearly this is not the correct behaviour even if the unit cannot interpret the information sent by the NASA AIS Engine.

Is this a known problem? Is there going to be a firmware upgrade to resolve the issue?

Strikes me that they haven't written the error handler properly.....

Didn't really matter at the time as vis was superb, but a little annoying and reminder that electronics are not always reliable....

This problem must have been a very great disappointment to you, I'm afraid I can only add to that by saying I was getting onboard AIS plotting at up to 111nm range over the weekend, but I don't use a Standard Horizon plotter and AIS engine.

This fault was reported by someone a few weeks ago and strangely enough John Brooks of Standard Horizon did not comment...

Johnie.........where are you ????????

Not a very great disappointment ... I'm in IT so I understand that these things do happen ... a little aggrieved at spending a lot of money on what has the potential to be a great bit of kit with the express aim to boost confidence in the crew for X channel sailing .... which has now taken a massive step backward ...

I'm not sure that fitting AIS will give a big boost to x-channel sailing. Once you see all those ships on the AIS that previously you were oblivious to you could start to think 'h--y s--t". How am I going to get through that lot?
I quite like the idea of calming windexes. i.e. It's a force 7 but the windex is a bit sticky and only reads a force 5. You should be able to set the amount of stickness depending upon the crew level onboard. "Don't worry dear. The windex sais it's only a Force 3."

Shh ... don't tell em that!!

Actually, whilst playing with the unit on Sunday it will take a fair amount of interpretation - there was an anchored vessel we were going to pass close to, it seemed a heck of a lot closer on the CP than it did by eye.... didn't help that it was changing direction on the CP (GPS didn't know what heading it was on did it... ) .... all depends on the zoom level ...

Have the solution to "how I am I going to get through that lot", a 20dB attenuator in the receiver antenna input, it makes things look much easier! As you say there ought to be a similar function on the instrument wind speed input.

Interested in your setup that gets you 111Nm range .... I guess that isn't typical ...

I was trying to establish our range, quite happily got 6Nm (we went from PHarbour to Chi and were picking up vessels around the Nab) - but that was all within sight anyway ... may well try changing the antenna over to the mast head one and see what that brings...

TBH on my last (and first) crossing it was not difficult to avoid the shipping ... Galadriel has radar anyway, but seemed to use that more of a matter of interest than final decision in collision avoidance ... Mark 1 eyeball and a compass were the primary instruments!! (Of course, it could just be that the skipper was so skilled in collision avoidance that he made it look easy ... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif)

I'm not unhappy with the installation so far - the chart refresh is very quick (as quick as my PC) and it is handy to have the ships overlayed on the chart on deck, though it would be more helpful if it did tell us where the CPA would be ... (bow, stern, port, starboard) ... but I believe that is a failing in most CPs that the software guys can sort out in due course....

I should say not. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I find the standard installation with a rubber-ducky antenna 2m above sea level gets around 15-20NM.

Mind you, the coastguard plane has a 'ponder and that sends out a signal for a fair distance; not to mention seeing a target inland! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I've had a response from Sam Ruddy, the service manager at Yaesu UK Ltd. The email footer says about confidentiality so I'll summarise...

I've been asked to do a RAM reset - which will delete any waypoints I've set (which I could restore from backup if required) - after which I will go back to him and let him know if it has fixed the problem (I doubt it ... but I'll have to give it a go anyway!)

I mentioned about the CPA data not including the vital information on where the CPA will occur (in front or behind!!) which he said he'll pass onto the "relevant people" ....

Well, it didn't fix the problem so Mr Ruddy is going to send me a card to replace the firmware in my unit ....

Sam - If you've found this thread - welcome to the forums - do signup and join in - we welcome all suppliers who are able to give a positive contribution!

Thanks for the update - let me know if it fixes things as I have a CP300 on order. Be interesting to see if I get the same problems - will report once I get it installed. (Perhaps this weekend if Malthouse pulls out the stops...)

Rick

Did you re install the SAME version of firmware or a later version.

I e-mailed Johhny Brooks at SH when you first posted but I gather he is away. I am interested as also have the 180 and intend fitting an AIS engine.

John

I've not got the new firmware yet ... but I'll guess that as they were not aware of the problem, any replacement firmware will be of the same version (or any updates were not written to deal with this issue), but I'll post here with the firmware versions ...

If anyone else has the same problem can you either post here or PM me ... ta!

Yes - got the same problem, no problems until AIS turned on then reboots at times when an AIS target is selected. Also noticed that CPA gives no indication of direction....

At least it restarts quickly enough1

Let me know if the firmware fixes the problem.

Let me know if we can help with that when the time comes?

We too have given JB a poke, hopefully he will be around to sort this out once he has waded through his in-tray. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Think there may be a queue of folks wanting to upgrade software! Good to know that its just a card that they can send out, rather than a return-to-base thing though....

Yes indeed, this is one of the areas where Standard Horizon excel. On the ocassions where I have had tricky after-sales support queries the guys and girls over there have bent over backwards to come up with fixes that don't rob people of their new and essential navigation aid.

Yay Yaesu! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
