Having to replace a couple of stanchions after some winter damage.

There are rubber grommets in the holes where the wire passes through the stanchion.
Since everything is taken apart it would seem a good chance to replace said grommet things.

Anyone know what they are actually called and where on earth they can be bought?

I am in the process of replacing my guard wire and have decided to replace the (mostly broken) plastic fittings in the stanchion holes with ordinary rubber grommets. £3 from ebay and look fine. If they fail they can be easily replaced whenever required i.e. split the grommet and fit into the hole. Don't need them split now but will need to fit Sta-Lok swageless fittings after the wire is through the holes.

I don't know if your stanchions are the same as mine (ie 1" dia s/s tube with 1/2" holes for the grommets) but what I did was remove the remains of the plastic grommets and insert lengths of 1/2" s/s tube, about 1-1/8" long, and locked them in place using two steel balls pressed into the ends in a vice to swage the tubes out slightly.

I did this more than 12 years ago and it has been fine ever since.

I cut the 1-1/8" lengths of tube in a lathe but if you don't have a lathee you could cut them using a hacksaw and smooth off the ends with a fine file.
