Hi

One of the 3 bolts that secures one of my stanchions to the deck has lost its head, so the stanchion is effectively only secured with 2 bolts. The problem is that the underside of the deck is obscured by wooden panelling, so it will be really difficult to replace the bolt with a conventional nut and bolt. I had been thinking of a spring toggle, as used to secure fittings to plasterboard walls, but I suspect that not only will this not be strong enough, it will also corrode. Any other ideas?

Thanks

Hello Neil
I had a similar problem with stantion bolts & access below decks but because people always pull the stantion 'sideways', I had 2 x stantion bolts with nuts through the deck and two just screwed in to the wood gunnel topping rail which due to wear would not screw down tight enough.
If you PM me I will send you pictures of before and after which solved the job with a simple bracket and it has worked so far very well, it may be not exactly what you can do but it will give you ideas.
Mike

For safety sake do the job properly . Take the paneling down it could save your life .

If one bolt has lost its head, what is the state of the other two? Almost certainly there will have been some bending, perhaps initiating cracks under the heads. Far better to bite the bullet and replace all the bolts, after removing the internal panelling.
