Our 6hp outboard has run perfectly for ages.

Recently it either starts and runs for about 30 seconds and then dies, or when it does run cuts out after a couple of minutes. The engine sounds laboured and then cuts out.

The fuel is good and I have used both the internal tank and external, both e same.

So tomorrow I will check and possibly change the spark plug , clean the injectors of the carb and check the fuel lines and filters.

Any suggestions as where to start? Which is the more likely culprit?

Cheers

You dont say anything about the engine. 2 stroke or 4 stroke or age.
You say "the spark plug" is it therefore a single cylinder engine ? ???

Change plug. Check spark and compression if you have or can borrow or steal one. Check fuel flow check fuel pump. Can you keep it running by pumping the fuel line bulb.

OR is the carb flooding ?

Thanks for the advice.
It is a 4 stroke.
Pulled it apart this morning , pump, fuel lines , changed plug and took the carb apart a couple of times.
After cleaning and blowing air through the injectors a couple of times it seems to be running fine again.

I reckon it was more than likely some grit clogging an injector that I couldn't see.

I have the 6 hp Yammy 4 stroke. Sounds like the carb had waxed up, old fuel waxing over the winter when the engine not used. Our local marine techies have a sonic cleaner, which did the job perfectly. You may well have sorted it by dismantling and cleaning.
