I have always used galvanised thimbles to join rope to chain, via a galvanised (12mm) shackle. If I use a stainless thimble, I know this will cause the shackle to rust, but will this corrosion be bad enough to significantly weaken the shackle, or will it merely be superficial? Because modern, so-called galvanised shackles corrode quickly anyway, I replace the shackles every year.

Why not do a rope to chain splice. It eliminates this thimble and shackle and also makes recovery over the roller so much easier.

Galv and Stainless togeather on a anchor rode is fine. If you leave the 2 togeather for a long time underwater you will have a problem but in and out is OK. The 2 need to be wet to do anything.

Talbot has a very good point and worth serious consideration. It would also be stronger than your average shackle connection.

Just a thought - if you don't want to use a splice why not use a s/s shackle as well as the thimble? That way I guess it would be the top link of chain that would corrode - and you could just prune the chain one link when it does.

I seem to remember having this setup once even though I was advised to have everything in galvanised. It worked OK.
