Can anyone recommend somewhere near Lefkas or Corfu where I could get some SS fabrication done - specifically an arch to support solar panels
Thanks
Steve
I took this photo in Vonitsa in sept. 2005; I haven't used their services, I haven't yet needed to, I just took the details for future reference... If it can help?
I agree. I have seen some of this man's work, it is excellent. I spoke to him by phone last season, he seems willing to discuss and supply what is wanted.
I've no personal experience, but the guys in Vonitsa were installing a sprayhood frame onto a Netherlands flagged yacht whilst we were moored there last year; it looked to be very well built and they were making a good job of installing it too.
I use a workshop in Lefkas. No phone No as I am In India at the moment. But if you come out the new entrance of Lefkas Marina.turn left to champion supermarket .Turn right up dual carriage way. Turn first left at crossroad.Just past the fuel station on right hand side.Has samples of his(First Clas) work outside.
good luck
I can recommend a guy known as Stainless steel Phil. English guy did some work for me, work completed promptly and very fair price.
To find his workshop head South from Nidri there is a petrol station on the left and I think just past there his workshop is on the right, there is a small sign and he is round the back.
If in doubt ask at CYS in Lefkas as they usually recommend him.
You can also anchor in Tranquil bay, take the dinghy across to the Pontoons just up from Neilsons (by a Hotel) and a short walk will et you there.
Steve - thanks for Stainless Phil I'll go and look him up at Easter. BTW - Do you think he is any relation to Metal Mickey from Davis's yard in Poole?
Lille Bee - Ive made contact with Wolfgang in Vonitsa and he has sent me the URL for his web site www.hainzl-design.net His work looks OK but seems to be all in 25mm ? Anyway, Ive arranged to go and see him when Im in Lefkas next.
Im a little concerned about the leverage effect of making this arch too heavy (boat is 34') but 25mm looks a little lightweight and I was thinking of a bigger O.D. tube - any views on that subject from those who've been down this path?
Looking at previous posts on the subject of solar/wind I think I may have to go for both at some stage as Im looking at a requirement of about 80-100 Amps per day and planning extended periods "unpluged", so I do need a solid platform for the generating gear (what I really want is a 1 cu cm dilithium crystal to power the boat for the next 10 years then I wouldnt need to bother with all this power generation malarky but as yet I havent been able to find one.
I have used Phil the Steel several times and he is reasonable but one has to be patient. When I was his customer he was not keen to work mornings so invariably one was waiting for stuff.
While you are waiting in Nidri there is a very amenable guy, Secondhand Jeff, in Vliko, a mile to the south who will make you an offer for your unwanted marine jumble or might have something you need. I have sold him chain and an anchor and he gives a reasonble price but things cost more than you would hope.
Scarlet - Thanks for the note re Phil - I'm not too concerned, I dont work mornings when I'm in Greece either. I have already planned a trip to Jeffs as I have a 4hp outboard which is surplus to requirements.
Hi Steve. I've used 25mm stainless tube for our arch which is 2.4 m wide and stands high enough to walk under. It's supports a 50w and an 80w solar panels in aluminium frames and is made rigid by bracing the corners to stop side to side movement and a forward support on each side down to the deck at the same angle as the pushpit to stop fore and aft movement. Simple and effective and even supports the passeralle and i've used fittings and no welding. Hope this helps John
