Ok lets use this example:

3/4" Stainless Valve from ASAP Supplies. We all know ASAP in the marine sector: £19.60
http://www.asap-supplies.com/marine...nless-steel-ball-valve-female-each-end-405754

3/4" Stainless Vale from an industrial supplier: £13.57
http://www.valves-online.co.uk/acat...-Ball-Valve-Full-Bore-BSP-or-NPT-2012_05.html

Big difference in price. From experience has anyone seen any difference buying things like this from normal industrial suppliers as oppose to specialist marine suppliers like ASAP.

Yes. Marine suppliers charge a premium for "marine leisure", industrial suppliers provide to industry professionals. I know which prefer!

Eg gearbox bearings from Volvo Penta are the same as from an industrial supplier but with a 500% mark up.

Generally it shouldn't be a problem, but be sure about the grade of stainless.

For underwater exposure you need A4 or 316 ss, rather than cheaper A2 or 304 ss which is OK for topside fittings but not constant exposure.

It's not clear from your second (industrial) link which grade of stainless the valve is.

If it's the right grade and you're looking at like for like - go for the cheapest. Why not

Different materials, is CF8M suitable for marine service?

Some industrial suppliers have minimum order values and silly carriage costs.

CF8M is the cast equivalent of wrought 316 stainless, so should be perfectly suitable as the body, cap and ball are all made from it.

CF8M is a molybdenum bearing modification of of CF8 alloy and is the cast equivalent of wrought AISI 316 stainless steel. The presence of molybdenum increases the general corrosion resistance and the resistance to pitting by chlorides. The alloy is used in mildly acidic and alkaline conditions and for handling citric, oxalic and phosphoric acids.

If I recall correctly, the presence of moly is the main difference between 304 and 316.

So go for it, northcave.

Good luck.

Fractionally late.

For reference I just got the cheaper ones from valves-online.co.uk. High delivery cost but still a saving from all the marine sites. Arrived next day.

Quality looks excellent and has the addition of a nifty lock off handle. Maybe not very useful but if you leave the boat afloat somewhere and someone come aboard to check or work on it, means you could prevent them from using / leaving them open accidentally.
