I need to staple the back of my headlinings which are on 6mm plywood boards. I'm struggling to find 4mm SS staples and a stapler to suit without getting into very expensive territory.

I've found 4mm galvanised staples - not sure if they cut the mustard. Even some SS ones say 'not for marine use'.

Any ideas? Anyone got one to lend for some drink vouchers?

I'm sorry I can't answer your question but do you really need to staple the lining on the back of the boards.

Both on my current Moody and my previous Westerly which we relined the lining held well on the back of the board with just impact adhesive.

It was recommend by C&J. I made the new boards and glued the headlinings in the springs but they are pulling off the edges and sagging. I'd like to do belt and braces this time.

I bought some stainless steel staples but they did not fit the guns I had. I suppose i could have bought a gun for them from where I bought the staples ( Hawke House) but did not want yet a another gun!

(I cannot now find the staples!)

However I was glueing the headlining to the ply panels with a water resistant PVA wood glue as recommended and supplied by Hawke House.
So
I stripped the foam backing off the edges turned them over onto the back of the ply and glued them with the PVA ........ completely satisfactory.

The shortest stainless staples I could find were 6mm, bought from an e-bay seller. They are marked "not for marine use" and are probably 304 stainless, but better than galvanised IMHO.

304 ss staples in the interior of the boat will be fine as they are not in contact with salt water. I used them many years ago ad they were still fine 5 years later. I just used a standard plastic staple gun from Relex.

If you are ever up here in Glasgow, you are more than welcome to borrow both the gun and staples.

A friend who did the Hawke House headlining course told us that the method they suggest is to strip the foam backing off the leathercloth that is wrapped around the board, then stick only the surface 'leather' down. It holds better and lies flatter. No staples were used.

On my boat the previous owner had new upholstery and underneath had steel staples holding the thin foam to the plywood, they have all gone rusty and I would also like to buy SS Staples and re-do the job properly.

The only stainless steel staples I could find were 6mm and these were just a bit too long (I, too, was using plain vinyl on thin ply boards). I solved the problem by using long (ca. 20cm x 2cm) wooden lollipop sticks as spacers over the edge of the fabric at the back. These had the additional advantage (with two people doing the job) of allowing a decent length of the vinyl to be held uniformly taut before stapling. Shorter cut lengths of stick were used around corners. The sticks were of good quality, such that very, very few of them split when stapled. I cannot remember where I got them but a search will quickly give you several suppliers.

Yes, but when he gives the staples back his headlining will fall off !!!!
Despite being from north of Hadrians Wall, I'll re-phrase for the benefit of you Essex boys...

Borrow the gun and have keep as many staples as you need. :)

Good comment about the lollipop sticks.

I've seen those but don't do 4mm.

Will investigate the lollipop sticks

Thanks - it took a bit of head scratching to get to them, having first thought about plastic spacers/strip.

I had a very quick search to see if I could recognise my supplier, but came across many selling batches of 25. I had found a catering supplier offering batches of 100 or 200, for £2-3 a pack IIRC. The leftovers make good stirrers, too.
