Hi all, thought some of you may be interested to see my posting about making a stack pack.
http://yachtlivemagic.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/new-stack-pack.html

This includes a list of materials and instructions for measuring and sewing. Hopefully they are clear enough to follow. I don't yet have pics of it on the boat but will update as soon as I do.

Let me know if you need any better pics or more info and I'll update the blog posting. Let us all know how it goes when you make yours too.

A stack pack is a boom cover with integrated lazy lines to catch the sail as it drops. There's then a zip to close it and protect the sail from the elements.

Looks good.

May I suggest that you really need something to cover the zip with, the zip will degrade through UV exposure, and will also let the rain in.

I did consider it based on info from the forum but decided against for a few reasons. Number one, I hate flappy bits getting in my way. Second, a flap would need something to hold it down, this would likely be Velcro which degrades very quickly and looks very messy almost from day one. Finally, zips are cheap as chips and since I made the cover I know how easy it is to fit a new one. Replacing the zip would be about 20 minutes work.

As for rainwater...you're probably right and I'll report back as to whether my design is flawed later in the year. I get the feeling I'll have plenty of opportunity to test in the rain this year.
Cheers

Thanks, thats useful to know, making one is on my list of things to do, I went to Southampton and viewed various of the commercial ones, and listened to the sales speal as to why there's was better than anyone elses. However if it's easy to replace it, then simpler is probably best.

At the end of the day, unlike canvas, polyester sailcloth won't come to much harm by getting wet. The main role of a cover is to keep the sun off.

This is true, but the whole thing may end up green in my marina surrounded by trees. I'll post back later in the year and report on whether it worked. It certainly looks identical to everyone elses :)

It's been nearly a year so I thought a quick update was in order. The pack is now pretty much in the same condition as the day I fitted it, it's been working very well and has made dropping the main alone much easier. Water getting through has not been a problem, and neither has it gone green. The zip is still looking new too so all is well so far.
