I left a wash bag hanging on the loo bulkhead and wondered why our friends were seemingly going to St Vaast when we had quite clearly agreed Cherbourg. Then I found the beard trimmer buzzer kept in the bag had shifted the fluxgate (on the other side of the bulkhead) 15 degs or so....A good case for some warning stickers maybe?

We found that our fluxgate compass had an intermittent heeling error. It was mounted in a hanging locker in an aft cabin; someone had replaced the plastic hangers with wire ones. Heeling to starboard moved the hanger away from the compass, heeling to port brought them almost into contact. Of course, every time we looked at the compass to find out what was wrong, the clothes were pushed back away from the compass; result, error apparently removed. Then the boat movement would gradually allow the clothes to move forward, and it happened all over again. We didn't suspect the hangers because we "knew" they were plastic.

It's so easy to forget the fluxgate, especially if it is in a locker or the other side of a bulkhead. Ours now is in the bottom of a hanging locker (all plastic hangers, err I think....) where we keep shoes. Which reminds me that years ago I had a pair of very nice Clarkes sailing shoes that had steel plates for some reason in the sole, you could sit in the cockpit and steer by waving your feet around the tillerpilot!
