We ate well in St Vaast last week particlarly at

Fonti di Trevi being an authentic Italian with the best pizzas we'v had for a while. The service was a bit patchy but the food was excellent and well priced.

Fushias has managed to price itself well out of my league, €39 for one course... Set meals from €45....

Yes - I ate at les Fuschias a couple of years ago with two other dodgy characters from the Forum. It was very good, but expensive even then, and I think you can eat nearly as well for quite a lot less.

Someone else who frequents these parts has recommended the Nelson, which I think is on the Quai Vauban, opposite where the fishing boats moor.

Or you can always make a trip to M. Gosselin and eat chez vous.

We don't do the eating chez vous but did manage eight cases of wine, M. G. gave us a magnum of Bordeux as a pressy for the order and insisted on dslivering order to boat. Top service.

Didn't eat at Nelson but menu looked ok.

Les Fuchsias is well beyond reality now. We ate recently at La Chasse Maree which was good. The Nelson looked OK. The butcher opposite M Gosselin has superb meat for dining on board. Also oysters for sale locally which are excellent.

+1 for La Chasse and Gosselins is Magic. It's probably because there's no Carrefour or Continent hyper-marche nearby that he does so well. Of course it helps that the quality of his merchandise is so high. Last trip I brought back a case of his own label. Excellent glugging wine at a sensible price, although I could easily spend a whole day in his cave.

On market days there are a couple of stalls selling barbecued sausages - very tasty.

Also, on Sunday, there is a sort of mobile oven selling roast chickens and joints before lunchtime. It does a roaring trade with the locals. We bought a chicken there and had a traditional Sunday lunch onboard when we were stormbound there recently.

St Vaast tips please!

Sailing to St Vaast next week, any tips appreciated - are there decent beaches, and any other activities for young teen boys? Many thanks for any ideas!

St Vaast itself is short on beaches IIRC. The trip to Tatihou island on the amphibious vessel is worthwhile. There are tennis courts down towards the castle, and the walk round it on the top of the walls will attract boys - if they don't fall off! There are excellent beaches to the north of the bay, you can hire bikes to get there.

Hire bikes and cycle to the 75m Barfleur lighthouse and museum, its the third tallest in the world.
Its a stiff climb to the top but well worth the effort.
