St Swithin\'s Day

Oh Dear. Today is St Swithin's day, they say the weather we get today we get for the next 40 days!
Not looking good for my 2 weeks sailing in August then!
This day last year was hot and sunny and was followed by a good summer, so what's the outlook for this year?

Never know what to hope for. We're off early Aug as well, last year I had a migraine on the first day of our holiday cruise (seemed to be heat stroke / bright light induced) and we had to put in to Yarmouth for a day or two whilst I recovered.

Be pleased. If St Swithin and the weather over the last few weeks is anything to go by you'll be spared the heat stroke. Do you have any thermals on board ?

Fine weather <32 deg C (but not too much less) and with nice F3/4 Southerly will be quite acceptable.

Oh! I dunno, Tom Presutti's forecast is much more optimistic, especially for the first 20 days of August in SW Britain. Caution tho', he published it on the 2nd of June.

Could be worse

I pointed out the St Swithin's Day tradition to my MD, who is Mainland Chinese.

Beijing is located in a semi-desert (having lived there for some years, I can confirm that!) but he remarked that TODAY the streets are flooded two feet deep and more thanks to a very severe rainstorm - he has just emailed me a set of photos to prove it - stranded cars, cars disappearing down potholes where the road has washed away and so on!

Not at all - pragmatism verges on the edge of dreary acceptance ! Me I'd be out in the rain in me oilies - HWMBO, backed up tby the dogs, is convinced he isn't washable !

St Swithun

As a resident of Winchester, I know all about this one. I can't remember the exact myth but it's to do with his grave which, rather than being inside Winchester Cathedral as was customary for the eminent, was out in the open air. During his funeral, it hacked down with rain and continued to do so for 40 days and nights. Or so the story goes......... Rumours that Jimi attended the funeral are untrue, and scurrilous.

There is a massive, highly academic (and expensive) girls' school bearing his name (St S., not Jimi), on the outskirts of Town. It's quite gloomy looking, and gives the appearance of being permanently rain swept, even if it's not.

Given his Winchester roots, St S. is, of course, the Patron Saint of overpaid Merchant Bankers who commute to London.
