I'd be grateful for any feedback as to the merits or otherwise of St Margarets marine insurance (as advertised in YM). I've received an insurance quotation which is 30% cheaper than our current insurer and the policy cover seems very similar. Any opinions?

TIA

If it's any help in 1987, I was insured with St Margarets and they settled my claim quickly and fairly after the "hurricane". £8k IIRC, on a value of £10k!!

Been with them for 30+ years. Made one claim many years ago for damage to a sport boat trailer when coming home after a water ski session. They paid the full amount very quickly. Now with them for both a sports boat and my yacht which is based in Italy. The policy seems to be fairly standard wrt conditions and covers the whole of the Adriatic and Med. This year they extended the cover for the west coast of Spain and France at no extra cost. Very easy to deal with. I got estimates from other companies (including Saga as I am an old git ) and St Margarets were the best on price and coverage. Can't comment on their current payout policy as I have not made a claim since the one mentioned above.

St Margaret's Insurance

I have been with them for years, over 3 different boats, and they have been excellent. No complaints.

I've been with St. Margarets for years now, they have always been reasonable to deal with, although I have only once claimed. They extended the time between surveys for my 40 year old MAB to 10 years, 9 years ago. Most other companies I know of insist on 6 or 7 years at the most between surveys.

I have used St Margarets for years. I claimed through them when my trailersailer was hit on the motorway, they paid out and claimed back from the third party. I also had a claim a couple of years ago when my cellar got flooded and I found out that my stored boating stuff wasn't covered on my home contents insurance. I didn't get new for old though, as I would have if my home insurers had covered it. It would be worthwhile anyone checking their Home contents policy to see if boating, caravanning and car accessories are covered while being stored at home.

I've insured my Hobie with them for 20 odd years, no complaints. One claim when the rig came down in the dinghy park and broke someone else's dinghy, no problem at all.

St Margarets Insurance

They didn't want to know about a claim (the first ever) when the yard omitted to winterize the engine, leaving me with a written-off Volvo while Victoria Yachts went into liquidation.
They didn't want to know about the next boat either, quelle surprise!
Fortunately Bishop Skinner have filled the gap at a comparable price and with excellent service.

Not for me....

I was insured with them when my boat was burgled of its contents.
I worked out who done it, a liveaboard on a catamaran who left suddenly. I reported it to the Police, who caught them at Wapping. I got back a few odds and sods, but over 3 grands worth went missing, presumed sold.
They wouldnt pay out as there was no sign of forced entry on my boat.

I ask them to quote every year, just to create a little work for them.

Excellent. I made a claim earlier this year and it was settled in full. Easy to talk with and discuss the issues. They also seem to be very competitive with their quotes.

not if your trans atlantic

I was with them for about 8 years and had 1 claim of around 3k euros. They paid up no problem. However last year I commenced a liveaboard life and am heading to Brazil. When I requested a quote they said I should apply when I get to Canaries. On my insistence for a quote as I would be crossing within that years insurance, the reply was that under no circumstances would they insure me on a trans atlantic.
Fortunately I was on the hard at the time and I was able to get a new survey and insured with Pantaneus. My beef is had I waited until I got to Canaries it would have been very costly to do this. When I insured the boat originally with them they did cover the world but they have now stopped doing this.
PS the boat is a Warrior 38.

Good if the claim is straightforward, and they pay out quickly. Any problems with the claim, forget it, they are useless.

Immediate pay out for a stolen dinghy. Didn't want to know on a hurricane total loss claim when boat was sunk at its moorings by another (unidentified) adrift hitting it. Totally unhelpful.
