Ref. previous post 'Cruising in company', I am planning on leaving Chichester on Sun. morning (early) and heading down to St. Malo stopping at St. Hellier on the way to re-fuel. Unfortunately, I don't have an Almanac to hand to check tide times at: 1) Alderney Race 2) St.Hellier 3)St.Malo, and can't find any info on searches.
Has anyone got their Almanac with them that could post tidal info for me including tidal speed through 'The Race' in relation to H.W Dover.

Any help much appreciated, is anyone else planning a trip 'overthepond' this weekend?
Jonathan.

Hi Jonathan,

You already know what my navigation is like so take all this as bollox. I recon if you leave Chi between 06:30 and 07:00 on Sunday morning you should reach Alderney Race at slack high water. (10:15 ish).

As far as I can remember the lock opens between -2 hw and +2 hw st malo. I think it locks twice each way between these times. As the next high water at St Malo isn't until 21:30 you are going to have a wait to get in. Pick up one of the buoys outside and use your tender to get the family who can then help with the BIG lock.

I'll give you a call when we are out there and maybe meet up. At a guess we'll be in St Malo somewhere around 2-4 Aug.

Have a good time

Kevin

Thanks houghn, jhr & jjc, i've managed to work it out from the 3 links and it looks like my plan will work.
Leave Chichester at 04:00 get to top of Alderney Race with tide behind me, arrive at St.Hellier at high water and if i'm quick on the fuel wall should be able to make it to St.Malo for high water there at 11:19. All in time for lunchtime beers!
Does anyone know the lock opening times either side of high water?
Would anyone reccomend getting over to Yarmouth the night before to shorten the trip across?
Cheers,
J.

Stop-over in Yarmouth

To be honest:

1) It won't shorten your journey much, I'd have thought, and

2) In my experience, Yarmouth Harbour on a Saturday night in summer is not the greatest place in the World to get an uninterrupted night's sleep.

I wouldn't bother.

Hi Kev,
Unacustomed as I am at getting up early in the morning, I thought if you're going to get up early, do it properly. The hopeful consequence is that I should make it into St.Malo on the morning high tide and not have to sit outside waiting.... I'll let you know if it works.

Will stay in contact with regards to meeting up, should be something to look forward to if last year is anything to go by!

RYA Southern Cruise Cherbourg, etc 23 - 30 ending up in Guernsey then going down to St Malo, so there about 1-2 Aug, I expect, stop 3-4 days then spend another week coming back via Jersey, Alderney etc. Looking forward to it, hope to see you. Paul
