St Malo Restaurants

It's a couple of years since we went there but the Restaurant Robert Surcouf in the rue Toulouse was good. It's in the Intra Muros but away from the main restaurant drag. Looks unprepossessing from the outside but the Proprietor used to work at the Tour D'argent and the food is good and not expensive.

You will pay a premium to eat "intra muros" but, for the atmosphere, in my view worth it. St Malo's premier restaurant is, reputedly, "A la Duchesse Anne" - in the square near the Chateau (by Porte St Vincent). Very good, but its status is reflected in its prices. I think you get better value elsewhere.

I prefer to eat in the restaurants under the ramparts. From Port St Vincent, follow the road round to the left, with the walls on your left side. "La Bisquine" or "Les Remparts", both on Rue Jacques Cartier. Still fairly pricey, but the food in both is very good, and better value than the Duchesse Anne. If you want to sit outside under the awnings (from where you can watch the world go by) you will need to book ahead. If you are not bothered, and happy to sit inside, just turn up.

At the end of the day, this is France. The one thing they do very well is food. I would suggest you just wander around in the morning, browsing the menus, and make a booking where the menu/price and atmosphere take your fancy.

Enjoy!

If you are going into Bas Sablons then there is a nice restaurant along the 'main street' Rue de Dauphine, on a corner, left hand side as you walk towards St Malo. Beyond the little supermarket and launderette Take one of the set menus.
Nice view out over the sea

The card is on the boat, sorry.
Very nice & reasonable Well it was last summer and had a lot of my money for the month we were there

Buying shell fish in the market on the square in Bas Sablons on a Sunday morning can get you an amazing lunch value

Port St Pierre, 2 good value restaurants opposite each other (sorry, cannot remember the names). I now prefer St Servan, la Phare bar (spit and sawdust place but good if basic food, great atmosphere) and beyond the tower, (following footpath round) spotted another restaurant with fabulous views over the Rance and very good value menu. It was crowded with the French which is a recommendation, but I have not eaten there myself. In St Malo, le Chalut (near the mairie), fabulous seafood at a price and difficult to get in to (have to book).

Half the fun is walking around doing the research - had the most fantastic meal last year at Ducesse Anne, but literally scores of restaurants to choose from, which strangely enough because of the competition seems to keep the prices more reasonable.

1. St Malo old town, a massive stone fortress, rebuilt in its original style after serious war damage. Eating here is good, if more expensive than the average. Top of the range is 'Duchesse Anne', just inside the Porte St Vincent on the left. Book: 02.99.40.85.33, and be prepared to pay over €40 a head. Keep wandering left under the wall, and with luck you may find the piratical 'Bourgnefesse' (10 Rue du Puits aux Braies) where informality reigns, with cheaper prices, a standard French cuisine, and a very entertaining host. Is he still there?

[/ QUOTE ] Has anyone visited the 'Bourgnefesse' recently? My last meal there was three years ago, when the host made a point of inviting in some very good musicians, filling in the time with some scandalous anecdotes to all and sundry as the coffees were served . . . but he may well have moved on. Or burnt out.

There are any number of them. Just wander round and look at the menus.

Thanks for the replies. And gee thanks for that advice as I just had not considered walking round and looking!!

The purpose of posting is that we are only certain of spending 1 night there and at present not sure of arrival time.

Has this Forum changed? As a sailing newbe 12 yrs ago I asked a similar question about Cherbourg and our 1st Xchannel and got a number recommending Cafe de Paris.

We found it very good and not a rip off. However it is sometimes fully booked.

Hence my question as I prefer a recommendation so that I can book ahead.

Wandering around and choosing on the day may mean that food quality is dissapointing and at worse we spend a lot for a tummy ache.
