St Malo problem

The marina is next to the ferry terminal and has always been able to queeze us in and stay afloat due to the weir. However there are some boat yards up the Rance which should be nicely sheltered.

If you choose to go up the Rance get into the lock first so your mast doesn't foul the road bridge. Think the lock opens on the hour going up and half past on the way down.

If you have the time and reasonable draft Dinan very pretty and well worth a visit. Wicked hill to test the legs to get to the town and afterwards you end up doing the bread boy on the Hovis advert. We moored on the public quay in front on the Great Western hotel lots of room. Capitanarie opposite in oldie looking building.

I've wanted to go there by boat since we had a short stop when driving to Cherbourg for the ferry and couldn't spare the time to explore. IIRC there is a low cable just downstream - do you recall whether it is a problem?

We did it in a rib and stayed in the Great Western, so cable wasn't a problem to worry about. However on the West side of the river/canal at Dinan there is a small marina with yachts up to 30 feet or so.

Try the marina at Plouer, very sheltered.

I'll second that. Last I heard Lillian was still there. as well as being helpful and freindly she speaks english (for the lingually challenged amongst us :)) and cheap enuf taxi to St Malo.

Leopard.... Just got back from there. Cables and bridges are well high. My mast is 42ft from the cabin top and I was well clear. Dinan is an excellent medieval town with really old wooden buildings and an impressive cathedral, well worth walking up the very steep hill for. Le Chantelier lock just below Dinan is 8 metres wide and seems much less than this on approach but careful going out as it's narrowest point is the upstream exit gate. Plenty of clearance for me at 5 metres but tighter for you. Anything else you need to know PM me.
