St Carles Visit Next Year

Having spent last 8 weeks in the area I would do Empuriabrava great with a small boat and you have some much to see and do from Estartit to Empuriabrava, Roses and Cadequets and all round the cap Creu its fantastic small boat area you will be very disappointed at SC as we were. You can even venture up to Colluire in France which is stunning!
A great area to explore and so much to do.

If this is more your thing rent a villa or apartment in Empuriabrava. With your boat you can get under the bridges which gives you load of choice and out of season good value.
Cruising ground starts just 10 mins away with clear clear water with load of fish.

That's a top shout, I love Roses and the surrounding areas. (Great driving roads also) My wife's grandparents have a house overlooking the bay at the top of the mountain and we spend hours with the binoculars and prosecco people/boat watching. Empuriabrava is perfect for your boat. If you leave it there it's an easy fly in, just an hour from Girona or Perpignan,France. :encouragement:

Many thanks for all this information it is most helpful and gets us thinking. I rather like Empuriabrava...... Never knew it existed before. We would tow the boat there for the holiday and tow it back. Quite a way I know and the old Disco (done 175,000 miles) is a bit of a worry but then any car can break down.

I also like the boat hire option in Lake Garda

For those that have taken their boat to Eupuriabrava where do you leave it when there

Regards

Dennis

How about a trolling engine for the Disco? Sorry. Couldn’t resist.
Seriously, I suspect your plan is a winner as there should be plenty to do and see in a venue that other people like. Whether you like it enough to go back is more subjective, of course.

You can rent boats in Empuriabrava

So a boat like your would be €2000 for the week low season. Interesting to weigh against the economics of towing and berthing

Re leaving the trailer email or talk to empurayachts ( I think it’s called) They store peoples boats and put them in the water when required.

We found the water round Roses a bit lumpy in August - man made from all the boats leaving Empuriabrava.
That said, if you leave the marinas early, you can find some great anchorages on the Cap de Creus.

Here are some pics

And a video I made when we anchored there.

Lovely video. It certainly looks the sort of place/area we would enjoy

Exciting times also the new DJI Mavic Pro 2 should come out tomorrow

Interesting info. I would need to do the maths but I think I can get mine there for less than 2000Euro particularly as the transport is us as well. As I said will do the maths however.

Another idea is to drive down normally with a reasonable sized SIB in the boot and outboard. These can be great fun....... Many Many options

Yep Cap de Creus is a lovely place but, as I say, the bay of Roses is unusually rough - even in good weather.
We put it down to the sheer number of boats leaving Empuriabrava.
If you can work around the heavy man made swell, and get out to the anchorages early enough, you can find some really great spots.

A thing to watch out for is the rock (Bajo de la Ferrera) in Cala de Monjoy at 42 Degrees 14.7443 Minutes North - 003 Degrees 14.1855 Minutes East - it nearly had us.

It was a bit rocky-rolly in Roses when were (Oct). At 17' you obviously need it fairly flat to enjoy it. June can be hit or miss, weather wise, and Roses is a lot further North than the Mar Menor. We enjoyed Lake Garda but other Italian lakes are available :)...
You need to do the sums.

Edit. Seems you can rent on the Mar Menor too.. http://happyboat.eu/

Indeed I remember your plot where you cleverly ( read luckerly) went between the rock and the cliff. On my google map it’s just at the end of the word Monjoi.

we have been doing trailer boating for many years and have been towing 17ft up to 28ft boats all over Europe,
from Belgium to South Croatia, SOF, Schotland Cornwal, ...
and can recommand this very much.
There are a few links to reports from our travels in the sticky cruise report tread on top.

Empuriabrave is a very good destination , but if you want to avoid the premium price for a house with a mooring; there are many other places where you can combine a b&b or appartment with a almost foc mooring,

at the time we rented a appartment in Cavtat Croatia (5nm from Dubrovnic) and had a foc mooring on a boy in Tiha Bay.

last summer I met a guy with a nice speedboat moored on a boy (at a small fee) near the Island Ischia / Near naples..
he didn't like trailering, and had the boat stored on the dry for the rest of the year at a good price..

my family (4kids) and my diving friends have many good memory's on trailer boating !
