my previous post elicited an immediate answer to my query, but the next question is, seeing how the ST6001 seems to be getting a bit long in the tooth, should I upgrade to one of the newer versions? Also, what about buying raymarine stuff from the USA via the internet and taking advantage of the weak dollar? Any does or donts? thanks

the difference in the 6001 and 6002 is more on case style (I think?).. functionality is the same. If this is a new b oat, and unless they have lots of older kit in stock, it will probably come with a 6002, a phone call should help.
the 6001/2 is only a control head, your autoplilot will then have a loosely termed "Couse computer" . another, larger box indoors which amongst other things supplies power to the drive unit. probably an s2 or s3. (Could be an S1 with a small drive)

Re ordering raymarine from the USA, yes !, do.. I just bought the nmea/seatalk interface for 70 gbp inc postage, as opposed to around 130 here !
We mark all imports Yate en Transito (in spain) and have never had an issue with customs etc, no taxes, nada. Also just bought a DSP unit for one of the ssb´s (ICOM) from hong kong.. again less than half price compared to UK.

If it works OK, don't waste money upgrading just to get a new model. If however it is not performing, then you need to consider very carefully whether the new model will do significantly better.
