Apparantly the new RCD rule is insisting on quieter boats.
Companies like Halyard have developed new double silencer systems to meet the new standard.
So anyone considering importing a boat should watch out for when these new standards apply.
I for one would welcome quieter boats – noise can be fatiguing on a long journey.

Now I reckon that having opened the thread with such a straightforward point, it is impossible to develop it into a typical Gludy thread ...... we shall see :)

Re: Gludy thread : noise

I fully agree, and would love to see noise control being a major issue.

ALSO gludy-wise, you are right : it is traditional to post a fully developed theory with lots of stonewall arguments in favour, rather than this wishy washy hardly-contentious "quieter boats would be nice" idea, which can't possibly be destined for a ton-up thread, nor even close! Maybe you're just getting past it, hm?

Anyway, I suppose if red diesel came in, then peeps might drive slower and hence quieter? (hehe)

Re: Gludy thread : noise

You see, I post a perfectly innocent post and bang - I get accused of being past it!!

In fact all my historic posts have been the model of moderation and thought - its the reaction to them by some with chips on their shoulders, or maybe lacking in security that blows them all up and whoosh ... we are away on a Gludy tonner.

Anyway I admit to being past it on a fair few things and grateful I am .... I never did enjoy my teenage years all hormones and no money ......

I think we would all gain by having quieter boats ..... we could creep up on those raggies without being heard ... there are all sorts of advantages.

Ah yes; but are waterjets quieter than conventional shaft- or out- drives?

Discuss. ;o)

PS I agree that quieter boats would be nice. However, as a petrolhead, I already have a smooth running propulsion unit that delivers oodles of power at a suprisingly low volume. However, I have to pay far more tax on the fuel, though of course this may change at the end of 2006 and, er, oops................... (continues

Re: Gludy thread : noise

hm yes.

However, beyond a certain point, the engine noise become less of an issue than the blimmin crashity waves. Is there a sort pipe-based hull form that would allow water to retain a laminar style flow form, perhaps with lots of longitudinal grooves or summink, i wonder?

Re: not the noise its the wash thats a problem

Need to develop a new hull that produces less wash,, after all when you see a big sailing boat doing 30+ knots, there isnt a problem with the wash!

Re: Gludy thread : noise

It's very unsporting of you to post such a tame thread. One of the highlights of the forum is Gludy tonners.

Anyway, back to the question in point, what is going to happen to boats like Extremes with through transom exhausts which cause bleeding ears if they go past at speed?

Re: not the noise its the wash thats a problem

Presumably something along the lines of the proposed high-speed cross channel ferries, looking a bit like a mastless trimaran? The trouble is that, like seacats, they will probably make rippingly good passenger carriers whilst being totally unloved in the leisure market, because (a) They won't make lots of noise, and/or (b) give the same ride and sensation of speed as a planing hull and (c) they are somewhat aesthetically challenged imho.

A bit like hybrid petrol/electric cars. On paper, the product that everyone will want but, in reality, a 22 carat, gold-plated woofer.

Re: Gludy thread : noise

The new fox hunting act just passed has a little know clause that basically means you cannot hunt Gludys anymore.

Now down to the subject .... I know that underwater exhausts will have to go because there is too much noise through the breathing or venting pipe. The exhausts that come out of the transom and into air are going to have to be super silenced before they reach air. Boats are simply going to have to be designed to meet the new standard and I for one think thats a good thing.

Yachts make so little wake because they have no props so if we had super silnced jets ,,,, thats the answer. In fact well designed jets really do the job.

I wish some folk could leave the red diesel issue to one side ... I have tried to avoid the subject over the last year and only reacted where and when I really had to because some twit or other was acting in a belly up cowardly, take anything the government spits out fashion as gospel.

This thread will die by 20 posts I reckon .....

Ragboats are noisier than Mobos

Near silence? No, it would just leave more airwaves for your* clanking/twanging halyards.

Aha - yes! Now we have the makings of decent fred drift...

My engines run on gas, and they run even quieter than petrol (honestly). Once warmed up, they settled down to just a wisper, so that I can sneek up on those noisy WAFI's...errr no didn't mean that. What I meant was gas is the same price as red diesel, but red won't be available from...errr...damn! I just can't restrain myself today! :)

Wouldn't crow too hard - I thought Calor were reducing the number of LPG sites due to low demand in some areas, no good having your fuel cheap as chips if you can't get it anywhere...

You see, I start a thread on engine silencers and you lot swing it around to the red issue!!!!!! Or even worse the jets and red issues.

It seems that I am totally innocent of anything to do with controversial threads ... its really you lot spoiling for a fight all the time. ... all I try to do is give my pennyworth about boating matters and you lot instantly try to mislead me and lead me away from the straight and narrow.
