My new boat, [well new to me] use to be SSR registered, is there any advantage in renewing it? Or, if i decided not to renew it, would the number need to be removed.

If you intend to go across the Channel to France, Belgium or Holland, etc., the boat will either have to have an SSR(/Part 3) or Part 1 registration.

The registration card will or should have been returned by the former owner so if you are not re-registering the numbers should be removed.
As previously mentioned, if you intend to go cross channel you would need your registration card.

Renew it , it's only £12! Although you may get a different number now.
