going through the SSR process at present (required by boat finance company) and today I receive through the post a slab of wood about 8" x 3" with my 'official number' and nett tonnage carved in. This is to be bolted or riveted through the 'main beam' or visible part of hull !! I can't recollect seeing this peice of wood on other boats - only the SSR number marked in vinyl stickers on the stern (which is what I was expecting.) So before I get my drill out, is this normal ??

Sounds to me like you've got Part 1, not SSR, particularly if it's being done at the behest of your finance co. Part 1 is the one that requires net reg. tonnage and an official number and which confers legal title. SSR isn't and doesn't; there was a recent thread about the differences between them.

You are right (a) sticky numbers are all that's required for SSR and (b) there aren't many places on a modern boat where you can easily affix an official number plaque!

If your registration is Part 1 then yes, this is not just normal; it's required.

YES! This is normal. Just find an internal secure part of your boat and affix it. N.B. A door is not sufficient it must be fixed to an immovable part of your boat.
The SSR numbers you see on an outside of a craft are not strictly necessary.
