Please excuse the newbie question but could not find the definitive answer from searching the archives ........

I'm just about to buy my first yacht (which is already registered on the SSR)

Can I register myself as the new owner & at the same time change the name of the yacht or does the registration process need to be completed first before changing the boat name?

Thanks in advance

JR

Changing ownership and name port of registry simultaneously on Part 1 is easy - just another form to fill in and send off. With SSR might it not just be easier to register it again in your and its new names?

It is the responsibility of the vendor to notify the registrar that he no longer owns the boat. You then register it in your name. There is no restriction on boat names (unlike the Part 1 register) neither does registration signify ownership. There is normally no connection between the previous registration and yours as it is all based on self declaration.

No problem in changing ownership and boat name on the SSR simultaneously - I did it myself a couple of years ago online. Can't remember the exact details, but if I managed to navigate my way throgh it then I'm sure anyone else will be able to.

There is the facility to do both on line at https://mcanet.mcga.gov.uk/ssr/ssr/

I think I'd do the change of ownership then the change of name.

It may be acceptable to complete the application form http://www.mcga.gov.uk/c4mca/ssr_application_form-2.pdf in oder to register in your name and with the new vessel name in one go and send by post.

Remember it is extremely unlucky to change the name unless you perform the correct ceremonies and carry out the other requirements to appease the gods.
The most important is to send a bottle of single malt to all the forum members who contribute to this thread
