Looking to register my new boat on the SSR and I need the Hull Identification Number.

There's a 'Westerly Marine Construction Ltd' plate - almost like the VIN plate on an old car - which has Yard No 'O 211' stamped on it. Is that the number I should use?

Will try to post a picture in a mo.

Ah OK - where would I find that on an old Westerly? She also has an official No from when she was on the part 1 register but I can't find any other numbers on her.

Not sure how I can help you there , but try looking in the shower , I know it laughable , our Moody as well as on the transom, it has it engraved in the shower wall just under the door.
Also you could try the westerly owner site . Someone must had the same problem .

On an old Westerly look around the transom just below the rubbing strake. That is where it was on the Berwick, from about 1976 , that i use to sail. Inconspicuous until you know its there but obvious once you know about it!

I'd expect to find it in the same place on your Longbow.

The current mandatory 14 digit form of HIN did not come into force in the EU until 1998 Before that date many boats did not have HINs

If necessary pop your question on the Westerly Owners Association forum and/or their Yahoo discussion group

VicS is correct - 1998 was when the current HIN system came in fully, though some builders used it earlier. Many older boats simply have no hull number.

For the SSR just put what you have - it's not critical to getting a certificate, but it's nice if your certificate does match up with something marked on the boat.

Thanks all. Mine's a '73 boat. Irritatingly 3 hrs away by car (until I get her launched and back nearer to home) so I won't be able to check until next weekend.

Don't worry about it for the SSR (or indeed worry about it all). I have a boat even older (1963) and just have the sail number which for that class of boat was issued in sequence as licences to build were sold (even if only a fraction ever got built). It is the only form of identity apart from the name on the boat.

Use your yard number on the SSR application.

Be aware that the numbers moulded onto some older boats could be a Lloyds standard reference, and be the same for all hulls off the same mould. This was the case on my 1986 Moody.

Thanks all. I'll register her with the maker's yard plate No then. Which I suppose has the added benefit of being instantly visible should any I visit parts foreign and have any gendarmes checking the boat out.
