Hello again,
So the SSR number has arrived ( we name changed our new boat and if anyone is even vaguely interested she has kept the original SSR, it's just now registered against her new name) and I am in the process of sorting out lettering etc when something occurred to me.
Every SSR number I have seen is in the same font. Now having just received the paperwork from the MCA I had a good squizz at it, and nowhere does it say the font must be Arial or whatever it is. It states about minimum height and width and the number 1, and how it must be displayed as dark against white or white against dark. And that's it.
I have had the draft come back from the signwriters and although I specifically asked for it all to be the same font, name, SSR, it has come back with name in the correct font, and the SSR in a totally different font (Arial or whatever). Now I haven't chosen some weirdo font you need to have your eyes half shut and head tilted sideways whilst 3 sheets to the wind to read it font. So my question is, who's right? Can I have the SSR font to match the boat name or does it have to be different. And yes I know the SSR number can go somewhere discreet so perhaps it doesn't matter, but I am genuinely curious.

The size and font that comes from the MCA is prescribed. So if you want to be correct that is what you should have. However, I have seen many variations on boats over the years and don't recall ever hearing of anybody being put in the Tower because they use the wrong font or size.

Yes, we also received it but the MCA said it was an example, and when I had another read it didn't say it had to be in that format. Just that they had provided an example.

This is what we received, and whilst it provides guidance relating to size and colouring etc it doesn't seem to prescribe a format. image.jpg

They relaxed the prescription some time ago. It used to specify black and some serif font or other and I think even placement (cabin sides?). Nowadays the specs are as posted by Deviation; it is possible to have white lettering if you wish provided it is on a dark background. I recall having this conversation with my yard when I got my SSR, as the change was fairly recent and they were acting as the OP's signwriters are, intending to set it in the old presecribed font which I didn't want.

Here's mine (snowy day long ago!)

Oh cripes. Verdana font in dark blue. Should I be worried?
