you can not leagaly fit this to any vessle of EU registar unless in the Guernsy, Jersey or IOM.

It is not just not CE marked it is not approved either ( under R&TTE).

The down side is if your vessle was inspected by Ofcom you could be liable for a fine of up to £5000 and confiscation of the radio and its power supply (yes thats you boat!)

I hope that clears it up for you.
If I can be of any more help please feel free to call me here.

This raises an interesting point. Can you tell us if you've ever heard of a private yacht being inspected by Ofcom and indeed what rights do they have to enter a yacht?

I have to say yes to this.

Mike Martin at Ofcom would be better placed to answer questions re right of entry.

Interesting, I was going to buy an 802. There is a company selling them which claims that there is an exemption 'given with bad grace'. I shall ask again.

All Icom dealers in the UK should know the rules regarding this radio.
The only exemption given is if the boat is leaving EU waters and not returnig.
This is done by contacting Ofcom.

As soon as I know what is happening I will let the list know.

I asked the same question re. M802 to ICOM Europe (Germany). This is the answer I received:

"Der Grund für die Verzögerung liegt darin, dass für Europa praktisch ein neues Gerät gebaut werden muss, welches CE und R&TTE-Zulassung besitzt. Da diese Entscheidung sich verzögert, wird das Gerät diese Saison noch nicht für Europa angeboten."

Translates into:

"The reason for the delay lies with the necessity to almost build a new product for europe, which complies with CE and R&TTE requirements. Since the decision to do so has been postponed, the product will not be offered on the euopean market this season."

Cheers

I would like to add that I have been exploring the market for alternatives with a DSC controller and remote head. I was offered a SAILOR 4000 system, which costs about EUR 6'000.00 without Pactor modem.

It looks like there are very few such systems available on the european market at decent prices which is a real shame. In many cases an Inmarsat C system is not an alternative to be considered. Since it looks like that the M802 is a very good system I would like to encourage our ICOM friend to persuade his japanese marketing colleagues to accelerate their development of a european M802 variant.

(The going price for a M802 system including antenna tuner, SCS pactor modem software, cables, etc in the US looks like around USD 4000.00)

Cheers

I have installed IC 802 on my boat, here in Slovenia. We will become EC member with 01 of May. Any idea if this unit will be EEC approwed?

Best regards,

Slavko

typical

a piece of kit that works perfectly anywhere else in the world all of a sudden is no good when fitted in the the great bureaurocratic republic of the EEC and makes us into criminals if we dare to fit it.
is it any wonder that people are getting p***ed off, putting two fingers up to them and taking a chance.
i dont recall having to put the make and model of my vhf and radar on my application for a ships licence and nobody has been to check it.
and by the way we went thru this a few months ago concerning dsc vhfs.
kim gave a few of us yellow cards because the discussion got quite heated.

Re: typical

Interesting . Dealer who installe IC 802 on my boat installed one on Malta as well. Never said anything regarding certification.
I had some problems with interference due to bad installation. E-mail works fine, weather fax as well. Only problem is Navtex. They can not make it work. Modem we use is Pactor II cx. I asked our agancy for telecommunication for certificate a month ago. Will see what happens.

I should imagine but this is not confirmed, if you already have it fitted they are unlikely to ask you to remove it.

It would be worth asking your radio administration who will confirm this for you.

At this time I can not offer a date or time scale for an Icom SSB for the EU market.
Sorry

Best regards

Jon, I\'ll rub it in re the lack of EU availability?

Just to rub it in Jon I will tell everyone in EU what a nice marine radio the IC-M802 is (I have no connections with Icom except that I occasionally independantly specify their products for boats). The only thing I do not like about it is the inability for the user to program the email frequencies themselves (which is an understandable disability for the case of the average user, however). Especially for multiservice use (eg marine/amateur) where frequency mobility is important, it is well ahead of the 710.

Apart from other interests in radio I am also a radio amateur. Using an IC-M802 with an 8 m vertical antenna on our yacht I last month worked from top of South Island, New Zealand another radio amateur working mobile from his car in England with a car mounted whip antenna. Both stations 100 w ssb (though marine tranceivers have low average ssb output compared to an amateur transceiver of the same peak power) in 14 Mhz band in unspectacular propagation conditions.
