I tried my newly installed Icom M710 today but got no response so I presume the thing is not transmitting properly.I called a few coastal stations both on 2182 and working frequencies .The ATU was making all the right noises wich makes me think it is tuning OK.I cleaned the contacts at the backstay and checked the earthing terminals, all was apparently well. The set is receiving as I got the weather report from somewhere.
When I transmit some of the LEDs on the switch panel light up in sincrony with the words.
The set is wired directly to the battery, not through the panel.
This istallation worked perfectly with my old M700 and nothing was changed.
What am I doing wrong?

Well of course it may not be transmitting but it sounds like it is.

HF you must know is notoriously unreliable so another try would be worth it. Failing that try to get someone to listen out on another set.
You can only work a station if you can hear them so weather reports received OK does not mean that you can talk to another station even if it is closer. Try another frequency like in the 6meg 8 meg or even higher. good luck olewill

I installed mine a few weeks ago and although I know that the radio is working, as I have successfully worked a number of Ham stations across Europe, I have yet to even hear anything on the marine frequencies. Have you tried it on Ham bands as well as marine?

You are probably already more of an expert than me but have you set the Tx power very low, try turning it up some.
The ATU makes all the right noises but does it achieve a good SWR? maybe your aerial connections have suffered during the winter. I recall that the 710 shows SWR, is it OK?
2182 is not really a long distance freq, as someone else has said, try other frequs.
Even tho its a marine rig, if its second hand it might have been opened up to include ham bands. Give them a try.
