Anyone know where I can do a Restricted VHF to SRC conversion in the Solent area?

So far I've not been able to find anyone who does this. One school told me they'd discontinued the course as they found the candidates couldn't even send out a mayday so now recommend the full 1 day course.

I'm VHF savvy and only want to do this because I've fitted a DSC set after the old one went unreliable. I believe that legally I can only operate this under wife's supervision (she holds the more recent SRC) which naturally crucifies my male ego.

You can take the exam without doing the course if you have read up enough about how a DSC works, but you must apply through your regional exam centre which is at the Warsash Campus, Southampton Institute of Higher Education. If you really want to do a course they will be able to help you find one.
Sorry, I don't have their phone number 'cos the codes have changed since my copy of G.22, the RYA GMDSS publication.

I've done various courses at Warsash over the years and will contact them. I'm familiar with DSC operation and will take the exam - don't really need a course.

I did it recently. The exam is one of those multiple choice thingies. Anyone who is half awake should pass it presuming you'd recently read a DSC VHF book. I really don't think you need a course if you've already got a licence and have adequate non-Solent style VHF experience! A visit to the library is called for.

Thanks John - I've now booked an exam at Warsash. Sounds a bit like the American driving test I did a few years back in Houston - hard to fail the multiple choice test if you've got anything between your ears.

I've bought the Fernhurst DSC-VHF book (covers the SRC) which seems to make sense.
