SPST toggle switch for thick panel

Or cut out a section large enough to accommodate the switch mounted on a (much) thinner panel.

If you can lay your hands on a router it would be easy enough to cut a recess on the back of the panel so that a "regular" switch could be used?

If you can bear a "pull to make" rather than toggle switch...

A couple of weeks ago I fitted one of these to a 10mm panel with shank length to spare - I think it would do for maybe 12 - 13 mm max. This was bought in a chandlers but beware: there are at least 2 types made and I have another with a shorter shank that wouldn't do.

Another idea, if you want a toggle switch but there isn't room to get a router into the back of the panel: a suitably big flat woodworking bit, preferably in a hand brace for control, could be used to remove thickness before drilling the fixing hole.

You could even do it without too much difficulty with a drill, some tape, and a chisel, if you're feeling old-skool :). Results probably not quite as neat unless you're a skilled joiner (in which case you wouldn't be asking :) ) but it's the back of a panel so doesn't really matter.

Rout out a pocket for the body of the switch, leaving a thinner face for the toggle to protrude through.

Nice piece of lateral thinking, prv !!!

The panel turned out to be thicker than was apparent from the "outside", nearer 16 mm, but is plywood, so easy to rebate out a depression on the rear face.

Job done.

So now we have a steaming light that works, for the first time in 6 years !!! This never worked reliably thanks to an error in factory-supplied wiring. The easiest fix was to add a separate switch for that light.

Thanks all for your ideas. I am replying now, but had perused the ideas earlier before setting off for the marina to do the job.
