cabin condition (1).jpgcabin condition (2).jpg

I have attached a couple of photos that show the general condition of the cuddy cabin on my 40 year old fishing boat....not that pretty!

I really want some advice on the best way to set about giving it a slightly less unfinished look, do I go at it with a stiff brush sand, fill and paint, or stick something over the top?

I would put a few weekends in to this I guess, and certainly don't need to make it look like a superyacht in side as the max value of the boat is about £7.5k

Basically would like to hear what others have done and the results?

I painted mine with white Toplac. Shiny white - it looked much, much better. A quick sand with 40 or 80 grit then plenty of paint.
I was considering flow coating it, but painting it was easy and effective

Non-woven carpeting stuck on with impact adhesive.

Cheap, effective, vast range of colours, provides insulation (sound and heat) and also prevents condensation.
It is what I used on my previous boat, a 1976 Westerly Centaur; although in this case the carpeting was stuck onto 3mm plywood panels, the effect would be similar.

It looks very clean.

I would lip the exposed ply with hockey stick or U section teak (if you can afford/get it). Pin it on with glue or just use glue with edging cramps or (best of all) glue and screw with matching plugs. You might also think of a couple of small matching shelves.

Danboline is a good cover all but expensive, folk have reported useful results with garage floor paint.

Clean with sugar soap, and then two coats of bathroom emulsion paint in white.... apply with a roller, clean brushes/roller in water.. best of all no smell....

Mine was painted with emulsion. It looked really grubby and went mouldy quickly. The gloss smelt for a bit, but has been very tough and easy to clean.

I recently repainted the exterior of my rendered bungalow. I discovered that a shoe brush- the soft fine-bristled horsehair type was excellent for initial cleaning (using Patio Magic). That type of bristle really wets the surface and lifts off dirt. Much quicker than sanding.

If it doesn't get too damp use van interior lining mat such as from Mega Van Mats. Sticks with contact adhesive and if you get the stretchy type it goes round corners very well. I am halfway through doing the inside of my fishing boat. The top half has been done with foam backed vinyl on panels, I am using van lining for the hull.

If painting or using carpet to line the walls, don't go for a dark colour as it will make the space look a lot smaller and gloomy.

You cleaned the outside of your house with a shoe brush?

Do you cut your lawn with nail scissors? :)

Sorry, not on topic, but I see in the pic the board with ON <number> RT <more numbers>. What do these mean? I ask, as I have similar but never understood what it is telling me, nor why so prominent as if it is shouting at me and is important!
